DURHAM, N.C. – The fourth-ranked Duke women’s tennis team kicked off its home dual match slate by blanking Elon, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 4-0 against Elon and are 36-6 against the Colonial Athletic Association.

“Any time we can win a match is big,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “We have three matches in five days and getting the first is important for us. Playing at home is also important for us. We’ve had a great home record the past few years and we want to set the tone. We take a lot of pride playing well here.”

The Blue Devils wasted no time getting on the board following 11 days off from competition as they secured the doubles point with two quick wins over the Phoenix. Senior tandem Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin defeated Alex Koniaev and Maria Paraja by a 6-0 victory on court one shortly before sophomores Kelly Chen and Hannah Zhao took down Olivia Archer and Suzanne Zenoni (6-1) on court three.

“We played two really clean doubles matches,” Ashworth said. “The third doubles was with two freshmen in their first match at home. They were a little nervous but it’s good to get that out of the way and move past it.”

Duke carried its strong performance into singles as freshman Margaryta Bilokin, Hamlin, McCarthy and junior Meible Chi were quick to get off the court.

Bilokin (1-1) defeated Paraja on court three (6-0, 6-1) just before Hamlin’s 6-1, 6-3 win over Archer on court five. Minutes later, McCarthy (1-1), ranked No. 58 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nicole Shiau on court four to clinch the match and 10th-ranked Chi (2-0) took down Uma Nayar 6-1, 6-3 on court two.

Eighth-ranked Maria Mateas was second-to-last off the court this afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Zenoni on court one. On court six, Zhao was able to secure a come-from-behind win over Koniaev as she was down 0-3 in the first set. The San Diego, Calif., native bounced back with a 6-0 second-set victory and ultimately won the point by an 11-9 tiebreak score. Zhao is 1-0 this season in her first match since May while Mateas is 2-0 in 2019.

The Blue Devils will remain in Durham for the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Duke is slated to face Gonzaga Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m.
