Marsh Claims Second in the Pentathlon

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Duke track & field team kicked off competition at the Armory Collegiate Thursday evening with two members of the squad in the pentathlon as Erin Marsh and Kate Kutzer placed second and third, respectively, in New York, N.Y.

Marsh held the top spot in the pentathlon until the fifth event as former Blue Devil Teddi Maslowski claimed first overall with 3,895 points followed by Marsh in second with the fourth-best point total in Duke history with 3,823 and Kutzer in third with 3,637.

Marsh started off with first-place finishes in the 60m hurdles and in the high jump to get 1855 points. The Buford, Ga., native clocked in at 8.58 in the hurdles before a personal-best 1.70m leap in the high jump. Marsh added 552 points with a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 10.34m before a third-place personal-best mark of 5.56m in the long jump. Marsh concluded the pentathlon with a seventh-place time of 2:29.50 in the 800m.

Kutzer opened her first pentathlon with a fifth-place time of 9.06 in the 60m hurdles before dropping in the overall standings by a 1.49m clearance in the high jump. The sophomore jumped one spot in the standings with a personal-best toss of 11.17m in the shot put. The South Pasadena, Calif., native went up three spots on the leaderboard with a leap of 5.64m for second place in the long jump. Kutzer rounded out the pentathlon with a second-place finish in the 800m in a time of 2:23.03

The Blue Devils will return to the track Friday afternoon for the second day of the Armory Collegiate.
