DURHAM, N.C. – The fourth-ranked Duke women’s tennis team resumes competition this weekend in Durham, serving as one of 15 host sites for the 11th-annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend. In addition to the Blue Devils, Gonzaga, Nebraska and Old Dominion are also slated to compete in the two-day event held in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The winner from each of the 15 sites earns a trip to Seattle, Wash., to compete in the 2019 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, scheduled for Feb. 8-11.

The Blue Devils are coming off a dominant 7-0 victory over Elon in their home opener as the Blue Devils wasted no time getting on the board following 11 days off from competition by securing the doubles point with two quick wins over the Phoenix. The senior tandem of Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin defeated Alex Koniaev and Maria Paraja by a 6-0 victory on court one shortly before sophomores Kelly Chen and Hannah Zhao took down Olivia Archer and Suzanne Zenoni (6-1) on court three.

Duke carried its strong performance into singles by taking all six points. It was the fourth-straight win over Elon and gave the Blue Devils a 40-6 all-time record in season-opening matches.

The Blue Devils are slated to first take on Gonzaga (1-0) Saturday at 10 a.m., marking the first meeting between the two programs. Gonzaga returns all but one athlete from last season and is led by seniors Sophie Whittle, Graciela Rosas and Domonique Garley. Whittle enters the weekend ranked No. 5 nationally in singles, and is coming off an ITA National Championship in the fall while Garley is ranked No. 79 in singles.

The Blue Devils won the only meeting between the Cornhuskers in 1985 and are 8-0 over Old Dominion with their last meeting in 2014.

Nebraska is 1-1 on the season so far after going 18-7 overall and 7-4 in the Big Ten last spring while Old Dominion (2-0) had a strong 2018 season as they went 19-5 overall and 5-0 in Conference USA.
