NORFOLK, Va. –Trailing 15-0, the Duke wrestling team made a furious rally to come within three points of tying, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback in a 24-17 setback at Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Center. The Blue Devils won five of the seven final matches of the dual.
After falling behind 20-3, Duke rattled off four straight wins to pull within striking distance of the victory at 20-17. However, Ali Wahab at heavyweight iced the victory for the Monarchs. Winning for Duke were Mitch Finesilver, Zach Finesilver, Matt Finesilver, Kaden Russell and Alec Schenk.
The Monarchs (7-5), receiving votes in the latest national poll, benefited from a pair of forfeits by Duke at 125 and 133 to go ahead 12-0. Tenth-ranked Sa’Derian Perry tacked on three more points with an 8-3 decision in a tough battle against Duke’s Josh Finesilver at 141 pounds to extend the advantage to 15-0.
A winner of 10 of his previous 11 matches, sixth-ranked Mitch Finesilver added another victory to his resume as he bested Kevin Budock in an 8-2 decision. The win is the 22nd of the season for the senior captain and the 84th of his career. He remains unbeaten in duals in 2018-19.
After a technical fall by No. 9 Larry Early at 157 pounds pushed the Monarchs lead to 17, 20-3, Duke rattled off four straight wins to make it 20-17 and leave it up to the heavyweights to battle it out.
Zach Finesilver started the comeback effort at 165 pounds, getting a major decision over Shane Jones. In control for the entire match, Zach was determined to notch the bonus points for the Blue Devils and got the match’s final takedown in the closing seconds for the 11-3 victory. The win is his 13th of the year.
Matt Finesilver followed suit with a major decision of his own at 174 pounds, beating Luke Drugac by a 9-0 score. The sophomore improves to 19-5 on the year and has 23 dual points to rank second on the team.
At 184 pounds, Russell captured his second win of the weekend in an 11-4 decision. Russell, 16-8 on the year, led 7-4 after two periods and pulled away with an escape, a takedown and the riding time bonus point in the final stanza.
The rally continued for the Blue Devils at 197 pounds as Schenk held off a late flurry of attempts from Tim Young to score the 6-4 decision and pull Duke within striking distance of the tie or win. Schenk led 5-1 after two periods and despite every effort from Young, picked up his fourth win of the campaign.
Wahab, holding a significant weight advantage on Araad Fisher, registered an early takedown and worked his way to the 9-0 major decision.
