Need To Know

  • Duke opens home play for the 2019 season with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, as it welcomes Big Ten foes No. 24 Indiana and Penn State along with ACC rival Syracuse to Durham. The Blue Devils went a perfect 4-0 through last year’s Challenge, defeating Purdue and Penn State.
  • The Blue Devils are coming off a dominating 9-2 win against Campbell on Wednesday in their first midweek of 2019. Bri Butler threw the first complete game of her career for the win, while eight different Blue Devils recorded a hit, with Caroline Jacobsen (3-for-4) and Jameson Kavel (2-for-3) led the way with multi-hit showings.
  • Last weekend, the Blue Devils opened the 2019 season in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the first international trip in program history. Duke defeated Liberty and Notre Dame to finish the weekend with a 2-2 record. Both losses came to Top 10 opponents (#3 Washington, #9 South Carolina).
  • Entering week two of the season, four Blue Devils are hitting .300-above at the plate, led by Kavel (.462) and Kristina Foreman (.417). Foreman and Jacobsen also own scorching slugging percentages entering the home opener, with Foreman tallying a .917 clip and Jacobsen a .846 average.
  • The Blue Devils made some history during Wednesday’s win at Campbell. In the fifth inning, Jacobsen and Foreman both rocketed off consecutive home runs to give the Blue Devils bakc-to-back bombs for the first time in program history.

Blue Devils Open Home Slate With ACC/B1G Challenge...
After spending the first five games on the road, the Blue Devils finally hit their home field on Friday, as they are one of the hosts for the 2019 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Duke welcomes No. 24 Indiana and Penn State from the Big Ten, while Syracuse joins as the second ACC team. Duke opened home play last year with this tournament, beating Purdue and Penn State to sweep the opening weekend of play at the Duke Softball Stadium.

Team Two Against The Field...
Duke will host No. 24 Indiana and Penn State to open home play for the 2019 campaign. The Blue Devils faced Penn State in this event last year and will meet the Hoosiers for the first time.

Duke vs. No. 24 Indiana
This weekend will mark the first time the two sides have met … Duke is 1-1 this season so far against first-time opponents … This weekend will be Indiana’s only competition against ACC opponents in the regular season … A win against the Hoosiers would give Duke its first win against an NFCA Top 25 program in program history.

Duke vs. Penn State
The Blue Devils took down Penn State twice in last year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge … Duke defeated the Nittany Lions 7-5 in its program home opener and 7-2 in the weekend finale … PSU went 0-4 in last year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge, also dropping a pair of games to Virginia Tech.

Going Baaaaack To Back...
Wednesday’s win at Campbell featured a little bit of history courtesy of two of Duke’s newest members. With two on and no outs in the fifth, freshman Caroline Jacobsen blasted a three-run shot on the first pitch to left, just like she did in her first-career homer in Mexico. Freshman Kristina Foreman followed her lead, hitting a solo shot to right center to give Duke back-to-back home runs for the first time in history.

No Rest? No Problem...
Opening day of year two started off early for the Blue Devils, with a 3:30 a.m. departure leading off a day of air travel to Puerto Vallarta. First pitch came across between Duke-Notre Dame at 9:30 p.m. ET that night, but that did not phase the Blue Devils. Duke would defeat Notre Dame, 7-3, before picking up another win two days later against Big South power Liberty, 3-1, to finish opening weekend with a 2-2 record.

Kavel, Jacobsen Tabbed All-PVCC Tourney Team...
Year two started with a strong performance south of the border for the Blue Devils and a lot of credit for that goes to the strong play of Jameson Kavel and Caroline Jacobsen. The two led Duke offensively throughout the weekend to earn Puerto Vallarta College Challenge All-Tournament Team honors.  Kavel led all Blue Devils with a .400 clip and scored four of the team’s 11 runs for the week. Jacobsen finished with a .364 clip, three RBI and a home run on the week.

Go DJ, That’s My DJ...
After rotating through several players last year, it seems the Blue Devils have found their second baseman for the 2019 season in Deja Davis. DJ has picked up five hits at the plate so far, with one being a double, and scored two runs of her own. Even more impressive has been her play on the basepaths. Davis is 4-for-4 in stolen bases, which is second in the ACC heading into week two.

Wilson Named All-ACC Preseason Team...
After earning All-ACC First Team honors last season, Raine Wilson was named one of the 15 members of the inaugural Preseason All-ACC Team. The Mechanicsville, Va., native finished the year standing top 10 in the ACC with 15 doubles (2nd), 62 hits (T-3rd), a .371 clip (5th), .453 on-base percentage (5th), .593 slugging percentage (7th) and 35 runs batted in (7th). She also topped the team with 19 multi-hit contests and nine multi-RBI performances, including being one of two Blue Devils to drive in four runs in a single game.
