PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Day two at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic saw the Duke Blue Devils (5-9) struggle, as they dropped a pair of contests to the Army Black Knights (5-10) and the Ohio State Buckeyes (7-4) at the Big League Dreams Complex Saturday.
Duke suffered a 10-0 defeat in five innings before closing the night with a 6-0 loss to OSU. The Blue Devils close out their time in California with a 12 p.m. ET showdown against the Utah Utes on Sunday.
Army 10, Duke 0 (5)
A five-run first inning fueled a dominating day for the Blue Devils’ opponent, as Army captured a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings at the Big League Dreams Complex.
Duke was held hitless for the first 4.1 innings, as a single from Reilly Metzger broke up the Knights’ no-hitter in the final frame. Kyla Morris would tack on Duke’s second hit with a two-out single to left, rounding out the Blue Devils’ offense in game one.
Army plated five runs on five hits and one error in the first inning to gain the early advantage. Two more hits in the next frame would push the Army lead to 7-0. The Black Knights’ final three runs came two innings later, as they used a sac fly and a double to push three more across.
Peyton St. George (1-3) earned the start for the Blue Devils. Amelia Wiercioch threw 3.1 innings of relief, with Brianna Butler closing out the final 1.2 frames, allowing just two hits and no runs with one strikeout.
Ohio State 6, Duke 0
A strong first inning from their opponent put the Blue Devils in an early hole for the second time in as many games, as Ohio State jumped ahead 2-0 in Duke’s second game. A pair of singles set up a two-RBI base hit for the Buckeyes that made it a two-run lead.
Ohio State added three more runs in the third off a pair of doubles, with the final run coming on a solo home run to left center in the seventh.
Duke’s offense earned five hits on the day, all coming in the top five batters in the lineup. A leadoff double in the second from Raine Wilson stood as Duke’s lone extra-base hit on the day. With her double, Wilson has now hit safely in four-straight contests.
Shelby Walters (1-4) threw 2.1 frames in the start, striking out two batters and walking a pair. Butler once again came on in relief, throwing 4.2 innings and striking out one while allowing just one hit.
