DURHAM, N.C. – For the second time this season, Duke University women’s basketball freshman Miela Goodchild has been voted ACC Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
A native of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, Goodchild is coming off a record-breaking week in which she set a Blue Devil record with eight three-pointers made and 14 treys attempted at fifth-ranked Notre Dame. The 5-10 guard finished the contest with a career-high 26 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Her 26 points joined only Duke great Alana Beard as freshmen to score 26 or more points against a top-five ranked opponent and the first to do it on the road.
Goodchild is the only freshman nationally to notch eight or more three-pointers against a power five team. She scored 21 of her 26 points in the second half and her 26 points was tied for the 12th most by a Duke freshman in school history. At Wake Forest on Sunday, Goodchild added 14 points, three assists and three steals in 40 minutes.
She hit 12-of-22 three-pointers on the week, while averaging 20.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals. Goodchild is only seven three-pointers away from matching Duke standout Rebecca Greenwell’s Duke freshman record of 72.
North Carolina’s Paris Kea was selected ACC Player of the Week as well Monday.
The Blue Devils feature two regular season games remaining. Duke will host Clemson Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., and North Carolina Sunday, March 3 at 12 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
