DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 2 Demon Deacons defeated the Blue Devils 7-0 at home inside the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon, ending Duke’s six match home winning-streak.
Wake Forest improved its record to 14-2 on the season and 2-0 in the ACC. The Blue Devils fell to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.
In doubles, Wake Forest duo Petros Chrysochos and Bar Botzer defeated senior Catalin Mateas and sophomore Sean Sculley 6-2. On court two, juniors Spencer Furman and Robert Levine regained momentum for the Blue Devils, winning 6-3 on court three over Melios Efstathiou and Siddhand Banthia. The clinching point came down to court one, as junior Nick Stachowiak and senior Jason Lapidus squared off against Wake’s Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev.
Gojo and Gadjiev took an early 3-1 lead, however Duke stormed back to take a 4-3 advantage. The Demon Deacon pair won two-straight games (5-4) and was a game away from earning the doubles point. Stachowiak and Lapidus evened it up at 5-5, however, Gojo and Gadjiev won the next two games (7-5) and clinched the doubles point.
In singles action, Banthia gave Wake its second point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over senior Vincent Lin. No. 20 Botzer earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Furman on court three and Gojo defeated No. 37 Stachowiak 6-3, 6-4 on court one to clinch the match for the Demon Deacons. No. 2 Chrysochos was victorious at the number two position 6-3, 6-4 over Mateas, No. 40 Efstathiou defeated Sculley 6-2, 6-3 on court four and Julian Zlobinsky earned a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win over Levine on court five.
Duke next hosts Penn in a non-conference bout Friday, March 8 in the Ambler Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
