HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In a week that the flu went through the team and an injury sprang up during the practice round, the third-ranked Duke women’s golf team made it through the first round Friday at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with five scores and a five-over, 289, to sit in fourth place.

South Carolina opened that action with a two-under, 282, to jump out to a two-stroke lead, while Florida State (284), Wake Forest (285), Duke (289) and LSU (290) rounded out the top five teams competing at the 6,160-yard, Par 71 Pete Dye Course at the Long Cover Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

Duke featured a one-over-par ledger heading into the final two holes, but four out of the five Blue Devils bogied No. 18 and Duke had one bogey on No. 17 to drop to five-over-par.

“We’re not exactly where we want to be after day one, but given our illness and injury, I’m proud of these women,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “Ana [Belac] and Virginia [Elena Carta] took one for the team today. And, Gina [Kim] had only played 10 holes in the practice round, in an effort to rest her due to sickness. She shot two under today on those 10 holes. We’re going to treat the illness and Virginia’s injury very carefully tonight and hope for better health tomorrow.”

Only nine golfers registered under par rounds Friday with Florida State’s Frida Kinhult leading the way with a three-under, 68, to pace the field.

After only playing 10 holes during the practice round due to sickness, freshman Gina Kim was three-over-par to start her round through nine. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., got things going on the back nine with birdies on No. 11, No. 14 and No. 15 and finished the first round at even par, 71. She enters the second round tied 10th overall.

Sophomore Jaravee Boonchant carded a one-over, 72, and is tied 20th. Boonchant, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, parred her first three holes, before suffering a bogey on No. 4. She then collected back-to-back birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 as she drained putts of 14 and 28 feet to get to one-under-par. Boonchant played her final 11 holes at two-over to finish with a 72.

Featuring the best start to the day was senior Virginia Elena Carta as she birdied holes No. 1 and No. 3, while moving into the individual lead at two-under-par. A product of Udine, Italy, Carta had her putter working early as she sank a 20-footer for birdie on the 389-yard, par four first and eight-footer for birdie on the third hole. She was three-over-par during the next eight holes, before draining a six-foot birdie on the 379-yard, par four 12th. Carta closed the final six holes at two-over-par to finish with a 73, which is tied 28th. She hit nine fairways, 14 greens and had 32 putts.

Junior Ana Belac had been dealing with the flu this week, but was solid to start her day with nine consecutive pars. She had a bogey on No. 10, but came back with her lone birdie of the day on the 137-yard, par three 13th as Belac connected on a four-foot putt. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, was at even par until the last two holes when she suffered bogeys. She is tied for 28th with a 73, after hitting 11 greens, nine fairways and rolled 31 putts.

After connecting on Duke’s lone birdie on the 162-yard, par three second hole, sophomore Miranda Wang struggled the rest of the way finishing with a 78.

Duke will tee off Saturday in the second round beginning at 9:20 a.m., along with LSU and Furman. The second round can be followed via www.GolfStat.com.
