CLEMSON, S.C. – After falling on the road Wednesday to Virginia Tech, the No. 44 Duke men’s tennis team bounced back and defeated Clemson 4-0 on Friday night at the Duckworth Family Tennis Center.

Duke improved to 7-8 on the year and earned its first conference victory of the season (1-3). Clemson fell to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the ACC.

In doubles play, senior Catalin Mateas and sophomore Sean Sculley earned a 6-4 victory over Carlos Kelaidis and Teodor Giusca. Senior Jason Lapidus and junior teammate Nick Stachowiak clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Yizhou Liu and Simon Baudry. The doubles point is Duke’s third straight and fifth in their last five matches. Juniors Spencer Furman and Robert Levine were tied with Jacob Jahn and Pierre-Louis Dodens at six all before the point was clinched.

In singles action, senior Vincent Lin gave Duke its second point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on court six over Jahn. Mateas cruised through set one on court three over Kelaidis, 6-1. Mateas outlasted Kelaidis in set two, winning 7-5, pulling the Blue Devils within one point of clinching the match. No. 41 Stachowiak did just that, defeating Liu 6-2, 6-4 on court one for his eight court one victory of the season.

“I am very pleased with how we responded today as a team after a tough loss Wednesday,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “We played another solid doubles point and that set the tone. Jason has really stood out on the doubles court recently and is playing the best tennis of his career.”

“I thought we did a much better job bringing great team energy into singles from the very first point” said Smith.

Duke ends its three-match road trip Sunday at Georgia Tech at 12 noon.
