PITTSBURGH –Duke redshirt senior Mitch Finesilver advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals on Day One of the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships with a pair of dominant performances. Matt Finesilver also pushed through to the second day of competition as Duke sits in a tie for 20th.
Session II Recap
Mitch after cruising through his first round match had no trouble with No. 19 seed Cole Martin of Wisconsin. The veteran 149-pounder went on the offensive immediately for the 2-0 lead and nearly rode out the first period. He extended his lead in the third period and closed out the 9-1 major decision in the final two minutes to pick up his 30th of the season.
He will face North Carolina’s Austin O’Connor for a fifth time in the quarterfinals. Mitch is 3-1 and won the past two outings, including the 4-1 decision in the ACC Championship match. His career-best 30 wins make him the 13th Blue Devil to register 30 wins in a season in program history.
At 174 pounds, Matt Finesilver went up against fifth-seeded Jordan Kutler of Lehigh with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. After early hand fighting between the pair, Kutler registered a takedown and then rode out the second period for a 2-0 lead and over two minutes of riding time.
Matt made it 2-1, but couldn’t get to his offense against the All-American, dropping just his third match since January. He will wrestle the winner between Dylan Lydy of Purdue and Vincent Deprez of Binghamton. Matt defeated Deprez by a 9-2 decision earlier in the season.
In the wrestlebacks, Duke went 0-3 overall with a couple of hard-fought setbacks.
Josh Finesilver fell to Virginia Tech’s Mitch Moore to conclude his 2018-19 season with a 22-14 overall record. Ben Anderson dropped his match to the Hokies’ BC LaPrade and Zach Finesilver concluded his career with a tough loss to Illinois’ Joseph Gunther in a 6-3 decision.
Anderson finished his first year in a Duke singlet with a 10-17 overall record, while Zach was 19-11. He ends his outstanding career as a three-time NCAA qualifier and sporting a 70-49 career mark.
Session I Recap
Redshirt freshman Benjamin Anderson started the day off right for the Blue Devils, pinning Lock Haven’s Alexander Klucker in the second period to launch the Blue Devils into a tie for first in the team standings with three points. It was just the second pin of the season after he registered a fall to advance to the NCAA Championships. Anderson, the winner of the pigtail match, dropped his next match against top-seeded and undefeated Jason Nolf of Penn State.
Mitch dominated Parker Kropman of Drexel in his first-round match, scoring bonus points for Duke with a 17-1 technical fall. The win was his 29th of the season and launched him into the second round with ease.
At 141 pounds, Josh Finesilver went back and forth with No. 8 Kanen Storr of Michigan before a late three points lifted the Wolverine to the 10-7 victory. Trailing 4-1 early, Josh scored an escape and takedown to tie it 4-4. He did the same to make it 7-7, but the redshirt sophomore came through in the end for the victory.
Joining Mitch in the championship second round is Matt after he bested Iowa State’s Marcus Coleman with relative ease 8-2. In a rematch from earlier in the season, the duo battled through the first period scoreless before Matt got on board with an escape in the second period.
Coleman responded with a takedown, but it was all Matt for the final three minutes of the match as he dominated the action for his 25th win of the season.
Zach Finesilver, seeded 23rd at 165 pounds, lost to No. 10 Branson Ashworth by a 9-1 score. He will wrestle No. 26 seed Joseph Gunther of Illinois tonight.
