Kim Paces Blue Devils in Opening Round at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – Paced by an even-par, 72, by freshman Gina Kim in round one of the Evans Derby Experience, the top-ranked Duke women’s golf team sits in tied for sixth place with a five-over, 293, at the 6,250-yard, par 72 Saugahatchee Country Club in Auburn, Ala.

Kim, a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., collected 16 pars to go along with a birdie on the 153-yard, par three seventh and a bogey on No. 18 in round one. She used an eight iron on No. 7 and stuck it to within 12 feet and made the breaking left to right birdie putt. Kim hit nine fairways, 12 greens and rolled 30 putts. She will enter the second round tied for 10th with a 72.

As a team, Duke is eight strokes off leader, Arkansas (285). Florida (288), Texas (290), Auburn (290), Kent State (292), Duke (293), Florida State (293), Mississippi State (294), South Carolina (296) and Baylor (296) rounded out the top 10. The Blue Devils were strong on the back nine shooting even par, after being five-over on the front.

Sophomore Jaravee Boonchant collected a one-over, 73, in round one and is tied for 21st overall. A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant played her first nine holes at two-over-par with a six-foot birdie putt on No. 8. On the back, she was one-under as she two-putted for birdie on the par five 10th. Boonchant added a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th, after she hit her nine iron from 130 yards. She hit all 14 fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts.

Following three pars to open her round, junior Ana Belac suffered a double-bogey on the 157-yard, par three fourth. She added three more pars and then went on a streak where she birdied three out of the next five holes to get to one-under par. Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, closed with three bogeys over her final six holes to finish with a two-over-par, 74. She hit 12 greens, 10 fairways and had 31 putts in round one.

Senior Virginia Elena Carta was three-over-par on the front nine, before closing strong with a one-under, 35, on the back to finish with a 74. She notched back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and No. 15 on her way to playing her final six holes at two-under-par. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, hit 11 fairways, 13 greens and had 33 putts.

Sophomore Miranda Wang started slow with a five-over-par ledger over her first nine holes. Wang, a native of Beijing, China, played the next seven holes at two-under par with birdies on No. 12 and No. 15 to get back to two-over-par. Her birdie on No. 12 was from 10 free, after hitting a nine iron from 133 yards. Wang was able to get up-and-down for birdie on No. 15. She closed with a bogey on No. 17 and par on No. 18 to finish with a 75. Wang hit 11 fairways, 11 greens and had 33 putts.

Seeing action as an individual, sophomore Hannah O’Sullivan opened her action on hole No. 10 and went on to finish with an 88. She notched her lone birdie of the day on No. 7.

Duke will tee off Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m., off hole No. 1 along with Mississippi State and South Carolina.
