AUBURN, Ala. – Duke sophomore Miranda Wang signed for a career-best, four-under-par, 68, Monday as the top-ranked Blue Devils turned in a tied for second place finish at the Evans Derby Experience in Auburn, Ala.

Wang, a native of Beijing, China, rolled in five birdies, all over her final 12 holes of action. Monday’s final round moved her up to a tie for 19th place, which marked her second top 20 finish of the season and fourth of her career. She notched rounds of 76, 76 and 68 over the three days to post a four-over, 220.

Duke featured a slow start to the final round, which opened with a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. The Blue Devils had nine bogeys early, but settled down to collect seven birdies over a four-hole stretch to eventually move into a tie for first with Texas. Both Duke and Texas would drop shots on the way in to pave the way for Florida State to take the team title with a six-over, 870, at the 6,250-yard, par 72 Saugahatchee Country Club.

The Blue Devils registered rounds of 293, 289 and 292 for a 10-over, 874, to tie for second with Texas (874) and Arkansas (874). Florida (880), Kent State (885), Auburn (889), South Carolina (893), Baylor (893), Mississippi State (901) and Ole Miss (901) closed out the top 10 teams. Kent State’s Karoline Stormo notched the individual title with a three-under, 213.

"I count it as a positive that we finished second in a strong field, while our five individual totals were within a few shots of each other," said Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  "If one of them goes low, we win. It didn’t happen here, but the odds bode well for the future."

Wang opened her final round on hole No. 4 and after parring her first two holes she suffered her lone bogey of the day on the 381-yard, par four sixth hole. She then struck fire collecting her first birdie on the 505-yard, par five 10th. Wang hit her second shot close to the green and then chipped to a foot, followed by sinking the short birdie. She was dialed in and on hole No. 14 she hit her 54-degree wedge from 87 yards to within three feet for birdie. Wang moved to two-under with her third birdie on the par five 15th.

After three straight pars, Wang registered back-to-back birdies on holes No. 1 and No. 2. She once again played the par five perfect and finished with a short birdie on the first hole. Wang then hit her wedge from 116 yards to three feet behind the hole on the 378-yard, par four second hole, before rolling in her season-best fifth birdie of the day. She hit 12 fairways, a career-best 16 greens and had 30 putts on the day.

"It was fun to watch Miranda today," commented Brooks.  "I saw much of her back nine. Pure golf - fairways and greens. She made it look easy."

Senior Virginia Elena Carta opened her round on No. 2 and held a three-over-par score heading to hole No. 10. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, was able to roll in birdie putts on No. 10 and No. 11 to get to one-over-par. She would connect on another birdie on No. 17, but had bogeys on No. 18 and No. 1 to finish the day with a 74. She tied for 25th with a five-over, 221. Carta hit 11 fairways, 12 greens and had 33 putts in the final round.

Entering the final round one shot of the individual lead, freshman Gina Kim was back-and-forth over her first 13 holes with three birdies, four bogeys and six pars to hold a one-over ledger. Kim, who hails from Chapel Hill, N.C., struggled on the way in with a six-over-par score on her final five holes to finish with a career-worst, 79. She tied for 27th with a six-over, 222.

After carding rounds of 74 and 69 the first two days, junior Ana Belac had a 77 Monday on her way to placing tied 19th with a four-over, 220. She birdied two par fives, No. 8 and No. 15, in her final round. A product of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac had 11 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 32 putts. Belac led the field with a six-under-par ledger on par fives.

Jaravee Boonchant finished the Evans Derby Experience strong with a one-over-par, 73, as she would go on to place tied for 30th with a 223. Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, was two-under-par over her final nine holes Monday with birdies on No. 12 and No. 14.

Sophomore Hannah O’Sullivan closed the tournament with a final round 90.

Duke featured all five golfers in the top 30 of the individual leaderboard, but did not have a golfer finish in top 10 for the first time this season. The Blue Devils led the field with a 4.78 average score on par fives for the week and was 13-under-par. Duke also led the tournament with 42 birdies.

Both Wang and O’Sullivan will next compete in the Bryan National Collegiate March 29-31 as individuals in Greensboro, N.C. Belac, Boonchant, Carta and Kim along with Duke incoming freshman Erica Shepherd will next see action in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur April 3-6 in Augusta, Ga.

As a team, Duke will then compete in the ACC Championship April 18-20 in Greensboro, N.C.
