AWENDAW, S.C. -- Senior Alex Smalley shot a three-under 69 in the final round as the No. 4 Duke men’s golf team finished 10th overall at the Hootie at Bulls Bay, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Bulls Bay Golf Club.
The Blue Devils shaved six strokes off Monday’s score with a 287 on Tuesday, but were unable to gain ground on the field. The host No. 20 South Carolina fired a 277 and won the tournament at 22-under par. No. 36 Kansas (-15), College of Charleston (-10), Missouri (-7) and Kent State (-5) rounded out the top five.
Smalley placed fifth overall with his seven-under 209 total. The senior from Wake Forest, N.C., opened his round with a birdie on the 10th, was back to even par with a bogey on the 15th, but birdied Nos. 16, 2 and 9 to finish three-under for the day on the par-72 course.
Kansas’ Charlie Hillier won the individual title with his 13-under par, followed by Missouri’s Rory Franssen (-10), South Carolina’s Jamie Wilson (-9), Charleston’s Raphael Geissler (-8) and Smalley (-7) to round out the top five.
Sophomore Adrien Pendaries also posted a top 20 finish, thanks to his final-round 73 that secured him a tie for 16th at two-under par 214. Pendaries had birdies on his first and eighth holes, but closed with three bogeys on the back nine.
Junior Chandler Eaton bounced back from a pair of 76 scores on Sunday and Monday, to shoot a one-under 71 on Tuesday. He placed in a tie for 57th at seven-over 223.
Freshman Quinn Riley was a shot back of Eaton for the tournament after his 76 on Tuesday. He placed tied for 60th, while junior Steven DiLisio was tied for 65th after shooting 74 on Tuesday, 10-over for the tournament.
The Blue Devils are back in action April 5-7 at the Clemson Invitational at the Walker Golf Course in Clemson, S.C.
