BLACKSBURG, Va. – The third-ranked Duke women’s tennis team picked up its 16th win of the season, defeating Virginia Tech, 5-2, Friday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. With the win, the Blue Devils are now 16-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play as the Hokies fall to 7-12 overall and 1-9 in ACC action.
For the fifth-straight match and 14th time this season, the Blue Devils secured the doubles point over the Hokies. Kelly Chen and Hannah Zhao teamed up for just the fourth time this season and defeated Elizabet Danailova and Samantha Gillas (6-1) on court three before No. 24 Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy defeated Natalie Novotna and Rita Pinto (6-2) on Duke’s top court.
Virginia Tech responded to get on the board quickly as Pinto defeated Zhao (6-4, 6-0) on court six.
Freshman Margaryta Bilokin helped put Duke back on top with a win on court five. Bilokin took down Nina Sorkin (6-1, 6-2) quickly and is now 13-4 overall this spring.
Soon after, Hamlin extended Duke’s lead to 3-1 as she defeated Danailova (6-3, 6-2) on court three. With the victory, Hamlin continues to lead the team with a 15-1 overall record in 2019.
The Hokies once again fought back to pull within one court of tying as Nika Kozar defeated No. 22 Chen (6-3, 6-3) on court two. With the loss, Chen snapped her eight match win streak and drops to 13-3.
It was freshman Maria Mateas who clinched the match for the Blue Devils on Duke’s top court. Ranked No. 15, the rookie defeated Novotna (6-3, 6-3) and is now 9-6 this spring and has won five matches in a row.
The last court came down to veteran McCarthy on court four who ultimately pulled out the 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory. McCarthy trailed 0-2 early in the first set before winning six games to take the first set before fighting back once again in the second set. In a gritty match, McCarthy trailed 1-4 in the second set and eventually evened it up at 6-6 before securing a 7-5 win in the tiebreak. McCarthy elevates to 8-4 this spring.
The Blue Devils will stay on the road as they travel to South Bend, Ind., for a noon first serve against Notre Dame on Sunday.
