DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Kaitlyn McCarthy became the 25th player in Duke women’s tennis history to reach the 100-win plateau Friday evening as the fourth-ranked Blue Devils defeated Syracuse, 6-1, in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

“This is a great accomplishment for Kaitlyn,” head coach Jamie Ashworth. “You have to be consistent and she’s won a lot of matches for us … a lot of big matches. She’s been as solid as I’ve had in my time here. This says a lot about the person and player she is.”

For the ninth-consecutive match, the Blue Devils captured the doubles point to give them a lead heading into singles. No. 23 Meible Chi and McCarthy defeated No. 90 Sofya Golubovskaya and Sofya Treshcheva (6-3) on court two seconds before No. 56 Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez picked up a 6-4 win on court one over No. 69 Kelly Chen and Ellyse Hamlin.

For the second-straight match, the doubles point came down to freshmen tandem Maria Mateas and Margaryta Bilokin on court three. Mateas and Bilokin defeated Maria Tritou and Guzal Yusupova (6-4) to seal the doubles point.

McCarthy was the first Blue Devil off the court with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court five over Yusupova. McCarthy became the 25th Blue Devil in program history to capture her 100th career victory. McCarthy now owns a career record of 100-36 and this season is 18-7 overall.

No. 32 Chen picked up Duke’s third point of the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court three before Bilokin defeated Dina Hegab on court six (6-0, 6-2). Chen is now 15-4 overall and Bilokin is 16-5.

On court five, Hamlin picked up her team-leading 18th win of the season by defeating Yusupova (6-3, 6-3).

No. 18 Chi came from behind on court two to secure her 12th win of the season. Chi dropped the first set 6-2 before coming back to win 6-2 in the second. Chi ultimately won the super tiebreak 10-8 after trailing 8-4.

Syracuse picked up its lone point of the match as No. 19 Knutson defeated No. 13 Mateas 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (8) on court one.

The Blue Devils will return to action Sunday for senior day against Boston College at 10 a.m.
