GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Duke University tandem of Ana Belac and Jaravee Boonchant turned in third and fourth finishes, respectively, to close the 2019 ACC Women’s Golf Championship Saturday at the 6,080-yard, par 72 Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

Belac carded rounds of 72, 68 and 72 over 54 holes to finish with a four-under-par, 212, to place third and notch her second straight top five finish in the ACC Championship. Boonchant tied for the low round of the day with a five-under-par, 67, to shoot up the leaderboard and finish fourth with rounds of 72, 74 and 67 for a three-under-par, 213.

As a team, Duke placed third behind Wake Forest (850) and Florida State (858). The Blue Devils closed the championship with a one-under, 287, after signing for rounds of 289 and 292 on Thursday. Duke finished the tournament with a four-over, 868. The Blue Devils have now finished in the top three of the ACC Championship in all 27 years of the event. In the nine times Sedgefield Country Club has hosted the championship, Duke has won only three times (2012-14).

“Today, we wanted to take some of the deficit back, and let Wake give a little back,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “But Wake didn’t do that. They played really well on a windy day. We didn’t play bad. We shot one-under so we played well. But it wasn’t enough.”

Wake Forest’s Emilia Miliaccio carded an 11-under, 205, on her way to claiming the individual title, while Siyun Liu of Wake Forest placed second (207).

“It was putting, but a lot of our putts were too far away from the hole,” added Brooks. “It was a little better than mediocre, but not good enough at this time of year. So we need to pick it up a little.”

A native of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac opened her final round with a very impressive birdie on the 368-yard, par four first hole as she drained an eight-foot putt to get in the red. On the day, No. 1 played as she hardest hole on the course with a 4.46 stroke average and allowed only two birdies from the top six teams on the leaderboard.

After bogeys on No. 2 and No. 4, Belac collected 10 straight pars, before registering a sand-save birdie from 15 feet on the par five 15th to get back to even for the day. She closed the afternoon with three pars and an even-par, 72. She hit 16 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 33 putts.

“I can say that I played pretty well,” said Belac. “I am happy with how I handled myself on the course. I just wish a little bit more putts would have fallen in, especially today I had a lot of lip-outs and some unfortunate kicks on the green that ended up from being very close to being a 45-footer to the pin. Overall, I was just very patient and how I handled myself.”

With her five-under, 67, in the final round, Boonchant matched the Duke 18-hole record for lowest score on a par 72 course. She matched her score from a year ago at Grandover along with Leona Maguire and Maria Garcia-Estrada ledgers as well.

“I would say I putted really well today,” said Boonchant. “I struggled with my putting in yesterday’s round, but today I was able to get the speed and line pretty good. It was much better than yesterday.”

Boonchant, who hails from Bangkok, Thailand, was hot on the front nine with four birdies over a span of six holes. She opened with a par on No. 1 and then drained a six-footer for birdie on the 385-yard, par four second hole. Boonchant would go to two-under, after putting her sand shot to eight feet on the par five fifth hole and rolling in the birdie. She stuck her next two approach shots under five feet and drained birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 to move to five-under-par.

After getting on the par five 10th green in two, Boonchant went on to notch her fifth birdie of the day to get to five-under. She posted eight consecutive pars on the way in, which included two up-and-downs on No. 11 and No. 14. Boonchant hit 15 greens, 10 fairways and had 29 putts on the day.

Senior Virginia Elena Carta totaled her fourth straight top 20 finish at the ACC Championship as she turned in rounds of 73, 74 and 74 for a five-over, 221. On Saturday, she had bogeys on No. 1 and No. 3 to open her round. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, got a stroke back on the 371-yard, par four No. 4 as she hit her 7-iron from 150 yards to 10 feet and connected on the birdie putt. She added second birdie on the 390-yard, par four sixth as he hit her 5-iron from 179 yards to six feet and sank the birdie.

Carta’s birdies on No. 4 and No. 6 were on two of the four toughest holes Saturday in the championship. Carta and Boonchant collected birdies on No. 6, which featured only six birdies all day. With 11 pars and two bogeys to close the rest of her round, Carta finished with a 74. She hit 14 greens, 11 fairways and had 34 putts.

Sophomore Miranda Wang closed the weekend with a five-over, 77, as she placed tied for 26th in her first appearance in the ACC Championship. A product of Beijing, China, Wang got up-and-down for birdie on the par five 10th by sinking a seven-foot putt. She had 12 fairways, 11 greens and had 35 putts on the day.

After struggling the first two rounds, freshman Gina Kim signed for a two-over-par, 74, Saturday on her way to placing tied for 47th. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., opened with a bogey on hole No. 1 as she missed the green short. She came back on No. 4 and hit her 6-iron from 149 yards to six feet and sank one of two birdies of the day. Kim added a bogey on No. 6 and four pars on her way to making the turn at 36. She hit the par five 10th green in two and two-putted for birdie to get back to even par, before closing with bogeys on No. 16 and No. 18 to finish with a 74. She hit 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 34 putts in the final round.

“I don’t see any big problems. I just see everybody playing a little beneath what they are capable of. We’ve got time. There is plenty of time until late May.”

Duke will next await the NCAA regional selection show Wednesday, April 24 at 5:30 p.m., live on the Golf Channel.

“Even though we didn’t win ACCs, I think everyone on the team did well in these conditions,” added Boonchant. “Especially it was really windy and was a good preparation for regionals and nationals. We just need to stay tough and keep grinding on.”
