CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Duke track & field team kicked off the first day of the ACC Outdoor Championships Thursday at Lannigan Field on the campus of the University of Virginia.

Junior Kiegan Lenihan was the first Blue Devil to garner a medal in Charlottesville as he placed second in javelin. Lenihan registered a toss of 232-10 (70.97m) on his second toss, which ranks third on Duke’s all-time list. Prior to his finishing mark, Lenihan opened the competition with a personal-best throw before extending that in the second frame. With his performance, Lenihan collected the lone eight points so far for the Blue Devil men.

Two Blue Devils also kicked off the first day of the heptathlon today as Erin Marsh is in second place with 3,502 points followed by Kate Kutzer in eighth with 2,873.

After four events, Marsh is on pace to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon. She will compete in the long jump, javelin and 800m to close out the event on Friday.

Marsh had an outstanding showing in the first four events as she posted personal-best performances in three events. In the opening event of the 100m hurdles, Marsh clocked in at 13.45 to take second for the second-fastest time in program history followed by another second-place finish in the high jump where she tied her personal-best of 1.72m. In the shot put, Marsh finished fourth with a personal-best toss of 11.71m before taking second in the 200m in 24.61.

Kutzer notched two personal bests, starting with a seventh-place finish in the 100m hurdles in a personal-best 14.60 before placing 10th in the high jump (1.51m). With her mark of 10.41m in the shot put, Kutzer finished ninth before a personal-best 26.08 in the 200m to take sixth.

With only three events scored on the women’s side, Monica Hebner and Stefani Vukajlovic garnered points for the Blue Devil women. In the 10000m, Hebner crossed the finish line seventh in 34:28.47 for two points while Vukajlovic’s eighth-place finish with a 62.95m mark allowed for one point.

Additionally, several Blue Devils qualified out of the preliminary rounds of their respective track events.

Lauren Hoffman qualified out of the 400m hurdle prelims with a second-place overall finish in 58.50, which is the fourth-fastest time in Duke history.

In the 1500m, Duke advanced two on the women’s side and one male to the finals as Kim Hallowes and Liz Lansing qualified for the women while Charles Cooper clocked a qualifying time for the men.

Hallowes crossed the finish line third overall in a personal-best 4:20.79 followed by Lansing in eighth in 4:25.03. Hallowes and Lansing are set for the finals on Saturday at 4:25 p.m. Cooper captured sixth on the men’s side in a personal-best 3:47.67 and will return to the track for the 1500m Saturday evening at 4:32 p.m.

A full slate of events and preliminaries continue Friday and Saturday, with finals in most of the running events wrapping up the Championships on Saturday evening.
