The oldest of Duke’s two home venues is picturesque Jack Coombs Field, which has undergone significant renovations over the past several years. Duke’s home stadium since 1931, Jack Coombs Field was recently covered with state-of-the-art synthetic AstroTurf and several other renovations as part of a significant recovery project to the field.
The renovations have transformed the historic field into one of the ACC’s top playing surfaces and significantly cut down on field maintenance. In addition to the field turf and a top-notch drainage system, Duke has also enhanced the look of the field with padding on the outfield wall that will also improve player safety.
Named after Duke’s most illustrious baseball coach who compiled a record of 382-171 at Duke from 1929-1951, Jack Coombs Field is located in the heart of Duke’s athletic complex, affording easy access to baseball fans on campus and in Durham.
The park dimensions have also changed with the recent renovations. The left field wall stands 325 feet from home plate while the left field power alley stands 370 feet away and center field is an even 400 feet from the plate. Right-center has deepened to 375 feet while right field has also been pushed back slightly to 335 feet.
Located just up the hill from Cameron Indoor Stadium, the historic home of the national powerhouse Duke men’s and women’s basketball teams, Jack Coombs Field is a scenic venue enclosed by trees and hills. A tree-lined view sits behind the outfield wall, and a natural hill sits along the first base line for additional fan seating.
The stadium has also benefited from a 120-foot by 50-foot all-weather hitting and pitching facility located along the third base line. The facility includes six batting cages, AstroTurf and a stereo sound system. A pitching machine with a self-feeder, training equipment such as a medicine ball tree and agility ladders are also available in the indoor facility.
A flag pole display at the entrance to the stadium greets spectators as they approach the field, and black wrought iron fencing encloses the stadium.
The baseball locker rooms have undergone improvements as well. The newest addition to the complex is a completely overhauled locker room that includes new lockers, a video room, a mural that features former Duke baseball greats and a player lounge complete with a big-screen TV and leather couches. The Blue Devils also showcase their rich baseball history with an Alumni Hall of Honor in the Team Room area and the Coaches Choice Lounge.
