Jones Selected For 2009 Youth Olympic Festival

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman Rhian Jones was one of 16 players recently chosen by USA Field Hockey to participate in the 2009 Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney, Australia. The festival will be held from Jan. 14-18.

A total of 1,500 athletes ages 13-19 from 27 countries will compete in 17 sports throughout the festival. Featured sports in addition to field hockey include archery, athletics, basketball, canoe/kayak, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, rowing, shooting, soccer, swimming, triathlon, volleyball, and water polo.

Jones has previous international playing experience as a member of both the Welsh and U.S. National teams at the U-21 and U-19 levels, playing in the 2008 Junior Series and the 2007 CanAm and Wales Games. Jones served as team captain of the Wales U-16 squad in 2005 and 2006, also competing in the European Championships in 2006.

As a freshman for the Blue Devils in 2008, the Havertown, Pa., native earned Longstreth/NFHCA First Team All-South Region and All-ACC honors. She played in all 21 games for Duke and scored two goals, adding two assists for six points in the midfield.
