Max Quinzani has 14 goals and an assist in the past three games.

DURHAM, N.C.óDuke University junior Max Quinzani tallied a game-high six points from five goals and an assist to lead the 13th-ranked Blue Devils to a 14-6 win over Yale in men’s lacrosse action today at Koskinen Stadium. Quinzani closed out an impressive three-game stretch in six days with 14 goals and a helper for 15 points.

“More so than the weekend it was the past eight days,” head coach John Danowski said. “It was four games in eight days, which is a lot. I’m very proud of the way they finished the stretch and I’m very proud of the way they started today. I was delighted with how we started today and delighted with the outcome.”

Duke (5-2) featured a balanced attack against the Bulldogs, getting goals from 10 different players. Seniors Ned Crotty and Zach Howell added a goal and two assists to the Blue Devil cause, while rookie Rob Rotanz tallied his first collegiate goal. Duke finished 3-of-4 on its man-up scoring opportunities.

“It’s a result of playing, failing, and watching film,” Danowski said. “Practicing and trying to get better. It’s a combination of all of those things. I think a lot of people contributed today and got one for us and that’s where we want to be. We want to be where anybody who steps on the field is capable of making a play.”

Brendan Gibson led Yale (2-2) with four goals and an assist, while Matt Gibson added two points (1-1) in the loss.

It was all Blue Devils throughout much of the first half as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Duke gained a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter with two man-up scores from Quinzani and a third tally from senior Brad Ross. The 3-0 lead after 15 minutes marked the fourth time this season Duke held its opponent without a goal in the opening period.

Firing on all cylinders in the second stanza, Duke added four more unanswered scores for the 7-0 advantage midway through the second quarter. The Bulldogs stopped the run at the 6:31 mark with a goal from Matt Gibson. Brendan Gibson provided the assist on the score that made it 7-1 at the break.

Quinzani opened the second-half scoring off an assist from Crotty at the 9:15 mark to push Duke’s lead back to seven at 8-1. Yale’s offensive found a better rhythm in the third quarter, tallying three goals, including two consecutive. However, the Duke offense matched and surpassed the Bulldogs, finishing the session with five goals for a 12-4 lead after 45 minutes of action. Included in the Blue Devils scoring was a goal from Tom Rynn.

The fourth quarter was a stalemate with both teams scoring twice. Quinzani and Stephen Coyle got on the board for the Blue Devils in the fourth, while Brendan Gibson scored twice.

Senior Sam Payton and rookie C.J. Costabile split the faceoff duties. Payton posted a 5-of-11 mark at the X, while Costabile won 7-of-11 restarts. Costabile finished the day with a .636 faceoff win percentage, a goal and an assist, and seven ground balls.

In goal, senior Rob Schroeder made eight saves in 55 minutes of action. Sophomore Sean Brady made two stops in the final 4:54 of the game.

Duke held a 42-35 advantage in shots and edged the Bulldogs 29-24 in ground balls. The teams were even on faceoffs at 12-of-24. The Blue Devils’ man-down defense held Yale scoreless on two chances.

Johnathan Falcone made 10 stops for the Bulldogs in the cage.

Duke takes on ACC rival North Carolina in the annual Carlyle Cup match-up on March 14 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised live by ESPNU.
