ALVATON, KY -- The Duke men's golf team sits in a third place tie midway through the second round of play at the NCAA Central Regional. The Blue Devils were even-par through holes No. 8-11 at The Club at Olde Stone when play was suspended for the day at 5:10 p.m. EST. Thunderstorms and lightening in the area also delayed play for two hours earlier in the day.
The second round will resume at 8:30 a.m. EST with a shotgun finish. Players will continue from their suspended point and then continue straight into the final round of play.
"We had a lot of solid golf shots today," said head coach Jamie Green. "I am proud of our guys for their patience today. It was a long day to get in nine holes but we will get back out there tomorrow. We are really looking forward to the opportunity to close these 36 holes well and be as prepared mentally and physically to play 54 holes and get in the top 5."
Washington remains in the lead at four-under through holes 10-14 of the second round. UCLA is eight shots back at four-over, while Duke (+10) and Ohio State (+10) are tied for third. N.C. State is fifth at 13-over. The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Sophomore Matthew Pierce is two-under through 10 holes of play in the second round. He birdied the par 5 11th hole and sank a 20-foot eagle putt on the par 4 14th hole to move to three-under in the round. After suffering back-to-back bogeys on No. 15 and No. 16, Pierce birdied the par 5 18th hole and added a par on No. 1 before the weather put a stop to play. Pierce will enter Saturday's action tied for fifth at even-par through 28 holes of play.
Wes Roach, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., was also having a strong round before play was suspended. He opened the day with a birdie on No. 10 and sank a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 14 to move to two-under. Following a bogey on No. 15, Roach carded a birdie on the par 5 18th hole to get back to two-under. He closed the day with a bogey on No. 10 and will enter tomorrow's play tied for 28th at four-over (through 28 holes).
Junior Adam Long is even-par through nine holes of play in the second round. He opened with a birdie on No. 10 and added another birdie on the par 4 15th hole. He also suffered bogeys on No. 13 and No. 17. The St. Louis, Mo., native enters his final 27 holes of the tournament tied for 13th at two-over.
Clark Klaasen sits in a tie for 28th at four-over heading into Saturday's action. He was three-over through eight holes of play on Friday when play was stopped. He bogeyed No. 11 to fall to one-over but quickly got back to even-par when he hit his approach to four feet and sank the putt on the par 4 12th hole. Following a double-bogey on No. 13, Klaasen drove the par 4 14th hole and lipped out an eagle putt before tapping in for birdie to move to one-over. He had bogeys on No. 15 and No. 17 to fall to three-over before play was halted.
Senior Michael Quagliano is five-over through 12 holes of the second round. He carded bogeys on five of the opening eight holes of play before posting a birdie on the par 5 18th hole. The Ardsley, N.Y., native also bogeyed the par 4 first hole to move back to five-over. Quagliano will enter Saturday's action in 58th place overall at 11-over.
