Open Four Wins Prelim Heat At South/Central Regionals

OAK RIDGE, TENN. – The Duke rowing team’s open four entry won the second heat of the preliminary round of the 2009 Aramark South/Central Regional Sprints Saturday afternoon.
The boat, composed of Laurel Sisler, Alex Japhet, Alison Sagar, All-ACC selection Lesley King and coxswain Tammy Lin, finished the course in 7:10.3 to best Virginia, Iowa, Notre Dame and Duke’s B entry. They will advance to the semifinals where they will line up against Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan, Iowa and Virginia’s B boat.
Duke’s open four B entry of Janet Bartholdson, Katrina Weschler, Sara Couch, Alex MacLeish and Anne Moriarity took fourth in their preliminary heat with a time of 7:15.82. They will now line up against Central Florida, Kansas and Tennessee in the semifinals.
In novice eight action, the Duke boat of Kathie Sun, Kathryn Lowry, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Brianna Briede, Caroline Fox, Kathy Smithwick, Stephanie Rosser, Ali Long and Laura Guth took fifth in the first heat with a time of 6:50.13. They will now face Alabama, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Clemson in the semis.
