DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Senior Nate Freiman has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Tuesday.

Freiman, a 6-8, 250 pound first baseman, graduates from Duke with a 3.83 grade point average as a History major and Math minor and is the first Blue Devil in school history to earn First Team honors on the national academic lineup. Also a three-time Academic All-District III selection, Freiman became Duke’s all-time home run leader in his second-to-last career game, mashing his 43rd career home run during an ACC Tournament win over Clemson.

With 20 home runs this season, Freiman tied ACC Player Of The Year Dustin Ackley for the most home runs in the ACC through the completion of the conference championship. Freiman’s 20 bombs were the most by a Blue Devil since 1994 and marked only the second time in school history that a Duke batter reached the 20-home run plateau in a season. The only other Duke player to reach that mark was Ryan Jackson, who hit 22 in 1994 and was Duke’s all-time home run leader before Freiman surpassed his record during the ACC Tournament.

A second team All-ACC choice, Freiman is one of the best all-around hitters to come through Duke, ranking second all-time on the school’s career batting average list (.356), fifth in career RBI (180), sixth in doubles (51) and tied for ninth in hits (251). He matched that production in the classroom where he has been a member of the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team and the ACC Academic Honor Roll every year at Duke.

Freiman was drafted as a junior by the Texas Rangers, but opted to return to Duke to put together one of the best offensive seasons that the program has ever seen. Starting all 59 games for Duke (35-24, 15-15 ACC), Freiman led the team in batting average (.352), home runs (20) and RBI (62) for the third straight year and sent the Blue Devils to the ACC Tournament first time since 2005. He was named Duke’s Male Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

Freiman becomes Duke’s first Academic All-America selection since 1994 when current head coach Sean McNally earned Third Team honors as a senior. Also a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, Freiman is the fifth player in Duke history to be named to an Academic All-America Team and the first to collect First Team honors.

Freiman is the only ACC player to be named to the Academic All-America First Team and one of three to appear on the three-team list. Georgia Tech shortstop Derek Dietrich earned Second Team honors, while North Carolina pitcher Adam Warren was placed on the Third Team.
