RENO, Nev. -- Four Duke pole vaulters made the trip west this weekend to compete in the Reno Pole Vault Summit. Junior Lara Jones competed on the women’s side, and senior Jonathan Fay, junior Tyler Clarke and junior Ian Cassidy vaulted for the men.
Women’s: Jones hit 12’-3.5”, which was good for a tie for 11th place in the women's College I competition, and also is an ECAC qualifying time. The ECAC indoor championships will be held March 3-4 in Boston, Mass. Jones had already qualified with her vault last week at Virginia Tech of 12’-7.5”.
Men’s: Cassidy turned in the best performance for Duke at the summit with a vault of 15’-11.0”. It was his first competition of the season, and earned him a sixth place finish in the men's College 2 division and a berth in the IC4A championships. IC4A’s are the men’s equivalent of the ECAC’s, and will also be held March 3-4 in Boston. Fay qualified for the IC4A’s last weekend with a mark of 15’-11” in Blacksburg, Va., and hit 15’-3.0” in Reno, which put him in a tie for seventh place in the College 2 group. Clarke vaulted to 14’-1.25” at the Pole Vault Summit, good for second place in the men's College 5 competition.
A Look Ahead: The indoor track and field team will compete next on Jan. 26-27 in two different meets: the Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass. and the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Blue Devils will not host a meet until the outdoor season, when there will be two in Durham. The Duke Invitational is Apr. 6-7 and the Duke Twilight is May 6, and both will be held at Wallace Wade Stadium.
