Sophomore Nate Freiman had his third career two-home run game to lead...

DURHAM, N.C. Ė First baseman Nate Freiman hit a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot in the first, and four Duke pitchers combined on an eight-hit shutout as the Blue Devils defeated Campbell, 12-0, on Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 26-17 on the season while the Fighting Camels fall to 9-34.

Duke’s 26 victories mark the second-highest win total over the last 10 years for the Blue Devils, trailing only 1998’s 38 wins.

Freiman’s two home runs were the fifth and sixth of the season and the 10th and 11th of his career. It was the third time in his career he has recorded a pair of home runs in a single game. Freiman also accomplished the feat against Boston College and Georgia Tech during his freshman year last season.

Centerfielder Jimmy Gallagher went 5-for-6 on the night and fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He had a leadoff blast in the bottom of the second for his fourth home run of the year and 12th of his career.

Senior Jonathan Anderson improved to 3-2 on the season, holding the Camels to five hits in five scoreless frames. Freshman Will Currier struck out two batters and allowed one hit in two innings of relief. Junior Ron Causey then worked a scoreless eighth with one strikeout and junior Ryan Perry preserved the shutout with a scoreless ninth for the Blue Devils.

Duke jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Gallagher had a leadoff single through the right side to start the inning. Two batters later, catcher Matt Williams singled through the right side, moving Gallagher to third. Freiman then belted a 1-0 offering to deep right center for a three-run jack. Third baseman Brett Bartles and rightfielder Alexander Hassan followed with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, shortstop Gabriel Saade lined an RBI-single to left to score Bartles.

The Blue Devils added three more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 7-0. Gallagher  led off the frame by blasting a 3-2 pitch over the scoreboard in right. Anderson then drew a walk before advancing to second on a single to left by Williams. After Freiman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Bartles sent a two-run double to the wall in left center, driving in Anderson and Williams.

Bartles led off the bottom of the fourth with his second straight double and Hassan drove him in with an RBI-single, giving the Blue Devils an 8-0 advantage.

Duke then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 10-0. Anderson reached on a bunt single and Williams drew a walk to begin the inning. Three batters later, Hassan laced a two-out two-run double into the gap in left center to score Anderson and Williams.

The Blue Devils pushed their 11th run across in the bottom of the sixth. Saade walked to start the frame and two batters later, Gallagher doubled to center, giving Duke two runners in scoring position. Anderson then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Saade.

Freiman then led off the top of the seventh with a solo blast to right center to give the Blue Devils a 12-0 lead.

Freshman Michael Ghizzoni made an outstanding catch in the top of the ninth to keep the Camels scoreless. After rightfielder Mike Causey singled to left to start the inning, shortstop John Watlington sent a hard-hit line drive to right center that would have certainly scored Causey but Ghizzoni was able to run down the ball in the gap at the last second, keeping Causey on first.

Freiman finished 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in the win. Bartles went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, Hassan was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Williams finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Anderson went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Saade was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored and leftfielder Jeremy Gould finished 1-for-4 with a double.

The Blue Devils had a hit in every inning and scored in six of the eight innings they batted.

Duke will take on Wake Forest this weekend in Winston-Salem. Friday’s game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start while Saturday and Sunday’s games will begin at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils will then take a week off before returning to the field at UNC Greensboro on May 9.
