DURHAM, N.C. – After setting a school record in the long jump to open the outdoor season, redshirt sophomore Teddi Maslowski broke a second school record this season, this time in the 100-meter hurdles. Travelling with the Duke track and field team to Chapel Hill, N.C., Saturday for the Joe Hilton Invitational, Maslowski looked to perfect her hurdling rhythm in a tune-up meet one week before ACC Championships, which will be held on the same track next weekend. In addition to Maslowski, Duke saw strong performances from numerous track and field members in preparation for next week’s meet.

Maslowski, who primarily competes as a heptathlete for Duke, broke the school record in the 100m hurdles by .01 second after winning her heat in a time of 13.92. The Burgettstown, Pa., native improved on her personal-best time of 14.02, which she ran earlier in the season at the Texas Relays. Maslowski also saw a personal-best mark in the javelin after recording a distance of 103-11.00 (31.68), placing her fifth in the event.

Duke also saw strong performances in the middle-distance events as freshman Haley Meier and junior Abby Farley won the mile and the 800, respectively, in each of their outdoor debuts.

“We took a break after NCAAs indoors, to give [Haley] some recovery,” said Duke Track & Field Associate Head Coach Kevin Jermyn. “We really gave her three, maybe four weeks of training now and she’s continually looked better and better since winter. She’s gotten a lot fitter, especially a lot stronger. The competition today was really good, so that’s a big confidence booster for her to start out so fast, this early in the season. Excited for the start, but I think she can go much faster once we get more racing under her.”

Meier, who won the mile in a time of 4:42.56, appeared consistent throughout the first 1,200 meters of the race, hitting splits of 1:11.06, 1:11.99 and 1:12.40 over the first three laps before putting on a strong move with 300 meters remaining to close her final lap in a time of 1:07.10.

In the 800, Farley worked with teammate Anima Banks through 650 meters before taking the lead en route to a first-place finish in a time of 2:07.78.

“Abby just missed making our distance medley relay indoors,” Jermyn said. “It was a tough decision, who to run there, so she got really motivated and put together a good month. She’s been looking as good or even better than that in practice. We had high hopes coming in, but it’s also a relief that in her first meet, she was able to put it all together.”

Freshman Michael Wilson earned a spot on Duke’s all-time list in the men’s 400m hurdles after winning the event in a time of 53.79. Wilson’s time is the fifth-fastest in school history.

In the field, freshman Karly Gregory recorded a distance of 18-3.25 (5.57) on her second attempt of the day, placing her third overall in the event. Gregory’s distance currently ranks fifth on Duke’s all-time list in the event.

Redshirt sophomore Thomas Lang remained undefeated in the javelin this season after winning the event with a mark of 221-4.00 (67.46). Lang’s winning effort is his second farthest distance this season.

Redshirt senior Austin Gamble earned his third win of the season after sending the discus 175-5.00 (53.47), just over five feet farther than teammate Stephen Boals, who recorded a mark of 170-4.00 (51.93), placing him second. Gamble’s winning effort came on his first attempt of the competition while Boals recorded his second-place finishing throw on his sixth and final attempt.

The Duke track and field team is next set to compete at the conference championships, beginning Thursday, April 17, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
