GREENVILLE, N.C.— Eleven different Blue Devils scored goals and 14 players had at least one point as third-ranked Duke cruised to a 19-4 victory over first-year program Furman this evening at Paladin Stadium. Senior Josh Dionne led all scorers with a career-high six tallies.
The Blue Devils improve to 7-2 overall, while Furman falls to 0-8. Senior Dax Cohan registered his first career goal in the victory, while Tanner Scott and Seamus Connelly both had their first markers of the season.
The Blue Devils got off to a quick start with three goals in the opening 59 seconds. Dionne scored twice in the opening minute as the Blue Devils built a 7-1 first-quarter lead. Six different Duke players scored in the first 15 minutes, including Jordan Wolf who extended his point scoring streak to 50 games.
Duke rattled off five more goals in the second quarter with Dionne adding two more and freshman Jack Bruckner getting one to put the Blue Devils up 13-2 at the break. The Blue Devils scored 13 goals on 25 shots in the opening half and held a 21-10 advantage in ground balls.
The trend continued in the second half with Duke getting two goals from Wolf in the first 54 seconds. Wolf finished with three tallies for his 25th career hat trick.
Defensively, the Blue Devils held Furman scoreless for 22:40 and for 24:17 during the game. Luke Duprey had three caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead the defense. A the X, Brendan Fowler won 10-of-17 draws and picked up eight ground balls.
Overall, Furman won the battle at the X 16-11, while Duke picked up 32 ground balls to the Paladins’ 27. Kenny Meinsen led Furman with two goals.
Luke Aaron and Kyle Turri split time between the pipes, combining for 10 saves. Jake Gavin made 10 stops for the Paladins in net.
Another ranked foe awaits the No. 3 Blue Devils this weekend as they welcome No. 6 Syracuse to Koskinen Stadium Sunday March 23. Faceoff is set for 12:30 p.m., on ESPNU.
