PITTSBURGH – Duke University redshirt sophomores Trey Adamson and Conner Hartmann posted matching 3-1 records to lead the Blue Devils to a 2-2 record at the Pitt Duals today at Fitzgerald Field House. The Blue Devils earned victories over Clarion and Buffalo and suffered setbacks to No. 12 Pitt and Eastern Michigan.

Duke is 3-5 overall in duals this season and 0-1 in the ACC after the 29-7 loss to ACC newcomer Pittsburgh. After falling to the Panthers and Eastern Michigan 26-10, the Blue Devils rebounded with triumphs over Clarion (28-9) and Buffalo (19-3) to finish the day on a high note.

Hartmann, ranked 19th, started the day on a tough note as he fell in overtime 6-4 to Anthony Abro of Eastern Michigan. The Port Orchard, Wash., native recovered and picked up a convincing 9-2 decision over No. 13 Nick Bonnaccorsi of Pitt, his first win over a ranked opponent this season. He posted his first fall of the season against Clarion, while his 6-3 decision over Buffalo put Duke ahead for the first time of in the come-from-behind win. Hartmann improves to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in duals this season

Already off to a strong start to the season with an 8-4 record, Adamson reached the 10-win plateau after his triumph against Clarion. He started the day with a major decision against Eastern Michigan, one of two wins for the Blue Devils against the Eagles, and added a decision against Clarion and another major in the win over the Bulls. Adamson is 11-5 overall and 6-2 in duals and a team-high six major decisions.

Redshirt freshmen Jake Faust and Brian Dorsey both posted 2-0 marks in their first career starts for the Blue Devils. Faust captured his first win with a 12-6 decision over Eastern Michigan Mike Shaw and added a second victory as Duke rallied from behind to beat the Bulls in the final match.

Dorsey, wrestling at 165, gave Duke six points overall in its two wins as he registered narrow decisions in both matches.  His win against Buffalo jump-started Duke’s comeback win as the Blue Devils outscored the Bulls 13-3 in the final five bouts.

The Blue Devils battled hard in the opening two duals, but were only able to manage a total of five wins. Faust, Adamson and Self captured wins versus Eastern Michigan, while Immanuel Kerr-Brown and Hartmann earned ACC wins at 157 and 197, respectively, against Pitt.

Also turning in solid performances for Duke were Kerr-Brown and senior Brian Self. The duo split their days, going 2-2 with both losses being hard-fought decisions.

Kerr-Brown, coming off of a strong showing at the Southern Scuffle, posted his second victory over a ranked opponent this season when he upended No. 19 Austin Matthews of Clarion 5-2. He also registered a major decision over Pitt’s Cole Sheptock. The Rome, Ga., native is 13-6 overall and 6-2 in duals and 2-2 against ranked foes.

At heavyweight, Self started the day with a thrilling double overtime victory over Cole Dillman of Eastern Michigan, his second overtime win of the season. After a loss to Pitt’s P.J. Tasser, Self finished the day with consecutive decisions over Clarion and Buffalo. Self’s win over the Bulls is arguably his most  memorable of the season. Needing a win to assure a Duke victory, the Oklahoma City native jumped all over James Benjamin en route to the 7-3 decision and a 19-13 win for the Blue Devils. The win was his fifth of the year and second dual victory.

Evan Botwin (133), Alex Elsea (125), Xaviel Ramos (141) and Jacob Kasper (184) all posted a victory for the Blue Devils as well.
