CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses today, falling to The Citadel and Campbell by a combined three points at the Carolina Duals hosted by the University of North Carolina. The Blue Devils lost to The Citadel 19-17 and to the Camels 20-19.

Duke (7-9) had four wrestlers go unbeaten on the afternoon as Brandon Gambucci (133), Marcus Cain (149), Trey Adamson (174) and Diego Bencomo (197) all added two more victories to their totals. Both bouts were seesaw affairs that came down to the very last bout.

The Blue Devils opened the Carolina Duals with the Citadel and built a 10-3 lead with victories at 125, 133 and 149. Gambucci gave Duke bonus points with a 12-3 major decision over Aaron Hansen, while both Peter Terrezza (125) and Cain dispatched their foes in matching 8-3 decisions.

Facing a seven-point deficit, the Bulldogs answered with wins at 157 and 165-pounds, including getting the important six points for a fall at 165, to go in front for the first time 12-10. Adamson quickly put the Blue Devils back on top as he registered his fifth major decision and 16th victory of the year.

A decision at 184 gave The Citadel a one-point edge, 15-14, with Bencomo and Self (HWT) left to wrestle. Bencomo, wrestling at 197 for the second straight match, edged Marshall Haas 5-3 for the 17-15 lead going into the final bout.

Duke's Self, wrestling up from his normal 197, battled against 13th-ranked Odie Delaney in a 14-3 major decision that gave the Bulldogs the 19-17 win.

The bout with the Camels was a bit of déja vu for the Blue Devils as the match came down to an overtime decision in the final bout of the afternoon. Duke built a 12-4 lead by winning three of the opening five bouts. Gambucci picked up his team-best seventh fall of the year, pinning Tanner Bidelspach in just 2:46 for a 6-4 lead and Tanner Hough (141) and Cain both added shutout decisions to extend the advantage to 12-4.

In nearly identical fashion as the first match of the day, Campbell earned wins at 157 and 165 to pull within one 12-11 before Adamson put the Blue Devils in front 16-11 with a huge 15-4 major decision over Cody Ryba. Adamson led 5-1 after three minutes and never looked back en route to his 17th win of the campaign.

A pin by Taylor McGiffem at 184 launched the Camels back in front 17-16 leading into the 197 and heavyweight duals. Bencomo scored five points in the final period against John Merickel to ice the 11-6 decision at 197 and give Duke the 19-17 edge with one dual left.

The heavyweight dual between Joe Nolan and Duke's Self was as close as the overall team score. After no score in the first period, Nolan started down in the second. The Camel heavyweight escaped to get the 1-0 lead and Self matched that in the third to force overtime. Nolan struck first with a takedown in the sudden victory period to give Campbell the thrilling 20-19 victory.

Duke closes its ACC schedule Feb. 20 at NC State. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Reynolds Coliseum.
