In the second set, Cunha continued to roll in the second set, 6-0, of the match on his way to the fourth consecutive quarterfinal appearance of his career. A product of Jaú, Brazil, Cunha becomes the first Blue Devil to reach the quarterfinals in the singles draw in each of his four seasons.
Cunha is slated to face No. 12 Blaz Rola of Ohio State in Saturday’s quarterfinal at 1 p.m. ET.
In doubles action, the dynamic duo of Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler edged No. 14 Dominic Cotrone and Davis, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals. Cunha and Hemmeler, the second-seeded tandem in the tournament, won a late break at 6-5 in the second set, before Cunha held serve to extend the match to a final third set. With Cunha serving and the Florida State tandem threatening to break to end the match, the Duke duo was able to save two match points to extend the match. In the following game, Cunha and Hemmeler were able to come through with a big break at 6-5, before Hemmeler held serve to seal the match.
