DURHAM, N.C. – After falling behind 3-0 in the fourth, Davidson put up six runs in the fifth and never relinquished the lead as the Wildcats topped Duke 8-4 on Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field.

Duke grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Second baseman Mark Lumpa got the inning going with a one-out single up the middle. Left fielder David Perkins then lined the first pitch he saw into the gap in right center for an RBI-double. Right fielder Grant McCabe followed with a single through the right side, moving Perkins to third. Center fielder Anthony D’Alessandro then sent the first pitch of his at bat down the left field line for an RBI-double. Shortstop Angelo La Bruna capped the frame with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left, driving in McCabe.

Davidson (15-19) answered with a six-run fifth to take a 6-3 lead. The six-run inning was highlighted by a two-run double from second baseman James Cerbie and a two-run single by center fielder Drew Gadaire. Catcher Daniel Gerow and third baseman Andrew Barna both had RBI-doubles in the inning.

Barna had an RBI-triple and Cerbie added an RBI-double in the seventh to extend the Wildcat lead to 8-3.

Third baseman Jordan Betts doubled to left center to begin the eighth for the Blue Devils. Catcher Mike Rosenfeld then reached on an infield single up the middle, moving Betts to third. Betts would then score on an RBI-groundout from Lumpa, making it an 8-4 ballgame.

Bryan DaCanal (2-1) held the Blue Devils to one run on three hits in five innings of relief to earn his second win of the season.

Duke starter Nick Piscotty (0-2) looked great early on, retiring the first 10 batters that he faced. Piscotty would go on to retire 12 of the first 14 batters he faced before running into trouble in the fifth. Piscotty took the loss after allowing four Wildcats to reach base in the fifth. Senior David Putman was a bright spot for the Blue Devils, pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts out of the bullpen.

La Bruna went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Lumpa and Perkins both had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. D’Alessandro had an RBI-double, Betts doubled and scored a run and McCabe added a hit and a run. Designated hitter Jeff Kremer and Rosenfeld both had hits for Duke (14-24).

Duke hosts Virginia this weekend at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Friday’s series-opener is set for a 6 p.m. start, Saturday’s game will begin at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s series finale will be at 1 p.m.
