Blue Devils Total Seven Wins at Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men’s tennis team combined for seven victories – four in doubles and three in singles play – Friday, Oct. 18 on the second day of competition at the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Regional, held at the Cary Tennis Park.

The morning started off with two of the Blue Devils’ three doubles teams advancing to Saturday’s round of 16.

Redshirt junior Cale Hammond and sophomore Daniel McCall were impressive their debut as a doubles team, winning a pair of tiebreakers in their matches Friday morning. The duo edged South Carolina’s Andrew Schafer and Ben Barnette, 8-7 (5) and outlasted 14th-seeded Robert Dudley and Luke Johnson of Clemson, 8-7 (4), to set up a meeting with UNC Wilmington’s second-seeded and 14th-ranked team of Rafael Aita and Sam Williams in Saturday’s third round.

After receiving a first-round bye as the draw’s top seed, the 11th-ranked tandem of sophomore Michael Redlicki and junior Jason Tahir cruised to an 8-3 victory over Winthrop’s Chase Altieri and Michael Chen to also earn a spot in the round of 16. The Duke pair will face ninth-seeded Brian Kowalski and Cameron Silverman of Elon Saturday. 

The 15th-seeded duo of freshman TJ Pura and sophomore Bruno Semenzato, which entered the tournament with a 3-0 fall ledger, posted an 8-1 first-round victory over NC Central’s Stephan Charles-Donatien and Tamina Kienka before narrowly falling to Parker McGuiness and Simon Norenius of NC State in an 8-7 (2) decision.

Four Blue Devils were also in action in the third round of the singles Friday afternoon, led by 22nd-ranked and third-seeded Redlicki, who dispatched Wake Forest’s Max Kan, 6-4, 6-4, to continue his run in the tournament. Twelfth-seeded and 111th-ranked Tahir joined Redlicki in moving on to the round of 16 with a solid 6-4, 6-4 decision against South Carolina’s Kyle Koch.

Semenzato, the 13th-ranked player in the draw, also advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Christian Van Der Burgh of UNC Wilmington, 6-4, 6-0. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native improved to 9-2 on the fall with the win.

After collecting wins in the first two rounds Thursday, Pura suffered a 6-4, 6-1 setback to 14th-ranked Brett Clark of North Carolina Friday afternoon.

The ITA Carolina Regional continues Saturday with two rounds of singles play, beginning at 9 a.m. in Cary. The doubles round of 16 will be contested later in the day.
