GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Duke baseball team totaled 11 hits and took advantage of eight walks issued by the North Carolina A&T pitching staff to earn a 15-1 victory over the Aggies Wednesday evening at War Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Devils’ 15 runs scored tied a season high set against Quinnipiac March 13. Duke trailed 1-0 after two before scoring four runs in the third and seven in the fourth to take a commanding 10-run lead. The game was ended after the seventh as the Blue Devils led 15-1.

All nine in the Duke starting lineup reached base and scored at least one run in the contest. Redshirt sophomore Chris Marconcini and junior Jordan Betts were both 2-for-3 on the night as the pair combined for seven RBI and four runs scored.

“We played well in all three phases,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “We had an answer after they scored with the two-out single in the second. We were really efficient with our offense in the third with the walk, the hit by a pitch and the two-out single. Then in the seven-run fourth, we did a good job with our two-out approach and kept extending the inning.”

Freshman James Marvel (3-2) picked up his third straight win, allowing one run on three hits in five innings of work. The Duke rookie right-hander struck out the side in the first and totaled five strikeouts in the game. Freshman Nick Hendrix and sophomore Andrew Istler each worked a scoreless inning in relief.

North Carolina A&T plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Third baseman Dairio Little drew a walk and stole second to move into scoring position. Catcher Stefan Jordan then sent a single through the left side to score Little and put the Aggies on top 1-0.

A walk and a hit batter kick started the Duke offense in the third as the Blue Devils sent four around in the frame. Freshman Kenny Koplove led off with a walk and ended up scoring a Jeff Kremer chopper to first after Reed Anthes was hit by a pitch and Angelo La Bruna laid down the sac bunt. Marconcini then came to the plate and laced a two-run single to right center to put Duke up 3-1. Betts followed with an RBI double, bolstering the Duke advantage to 4-1.

After scoring four in the third, Duke plated seven runs on five hits in the fourth to take an 11-1 advantage. Six of the Blue Devils’ seven runs in the inning came with two outs as Duke utilized timely hitting and four walks by the North Carolina A&T staff. Junior Mark Lumpa began the frame with a leadoff walk and also added a two-run single with the bases loaded.

Marconcini drove in a run with a triple in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch to make it 13-1 in favor of the Blue Devils. Duke scored two more in the seventh as Anthony D’Alessandro and Betts both belted doubles.

North Carolina A&T starter Tim Jones (0-2) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on two hits over 2.2 innings. Jones struck out three but also walked three batters.

Next up, Duke hosts Boston College in a three-game series this weekend at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. First pitch of game one is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
