ATHENS, Ga. – The Duke women’s golf team carded a three-over par, 291, on Sunday to earn a tied for sixth place finish at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview played on the 6,335-yard, par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.

North Carolina won the event with a three day 12-over par total of 876. Alabama (880), Auburn (883), Southern California (883), Georgia (887), Oklahoma (888), Duke (888), Texas A&M (893), UCLA (893) and Denver (895) rounded out the top 10. The Blue Devils completed play with an 888 team score, 12 shots behind the Tar Heels.

“We really had a pretty good tournament,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  “Our score was a little too high the first day, so it made it tough for us to make it back to the top against that good of a field.  All the top teams in the country were here.  Those last two days were solid play and we really only had one double-bogey of our counters during the three days, which is pretty good.  That is the kind of consistency that can win tournaments.  We just need to keep working and that is going to pay off.”

Top-ranked senior Lindy Duncan paced the Blue Devils in scoring for a third consecutive day as she closed the 54-hole event with a two-under par, 70. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native completed the tournament in a fifth-place tie with an even-par score of 216. Duncan completed her first nine holes of the day with a one-over par, 36, before carding a birdie on the three par-fives during the back nine to finish three-under on her final nine holes of the weekend.

Duncan collected her 15th straight finish of eighth or better in a tournament, after hitting 16 greens, 12 fairways and notching 32 putts in the final round.

After carding a five-under, 67, on the final day, Mary Michael Maggio of Texas A&M won the individual portion of the tournament, with a three-under par score of 213.

Following registering a 79 and a 73 during the first two days of competition, freshman Celine Boutier improved her score for a second consecutive day, closing with an even-par, 72. The product of Montrouge, France, opened her round with three consecutive pars before carding her first birdie of the day on the 385-yard, par-four fourth hole. The rookie would follow with a bogey on the fifth before completing her front nine with a birdie on No. 7 followed by two consecutive pars to make the turn with a one-under, 34. Boutier would complete her round by registering eight pars and a lone bogey on the back nine to finish the tournament with an eight-over par score of 224, which was tied for 34th.

Junior Laetitia Beck completed her third-round with a one-over par, 73, to close the tournament with an eight-over par three-day total of 224, placing her in a tie for 34th. Beck carded an even-par, 35, on her first nine holes before registering a double-bogey on No. 11. However, the junior was able to bounce back with a birdie on her very next hole, the 511-yard, par-five 12th. The Caesarea, Israel, native completed her final six holes at even-par with a birdie and a bogey to card a one-over par, 38, on the back nine.  She hit 16 greens, nine fairways and had 34 putts during her round.

After completing her first two rounds with a 84 and a 72, senior Stacey Kim completed her third round with a four-over par, 76, to finish in a tie for 73rd. Kim, who is out of Columbus, Ga., registered two birdies, three pars and four bogeys on her first nine holes, to open her round with a two-over par, 37. On her second nine holes, the four-year letterwinner carded three bogeys before closing with a birdie on the 488-yard, par-five 18th.  Kim hit 11 greens, six fairways and had 34 putts on the final day.

Freshman Yi Xiao completed her final round with a five-over par, 77, for a second consecutive day. After playing one-under par golf over her first six holes, Xiao completed her first nine holes with three consecutive bogeys to make the turn at two-over par. The rookie could never fully recover as she carded three additional bogeys on the back nine to close the tournament. Xiao, who is from China, finished in a tie for 61st, after hitting 13 greens, 12 fairways and posting 35 putts the final day.

As a team, Duke registered only one counting double-bogey over the 54 holes of play this weekend, while notching 14 birdies on the final day.

The Blue Devils will continue their fall season Oct. 12-14 at the Tar Heel Invitational hosted by North Carolina on Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
