CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Blue Devil junior Laetitia Beck carded a two-under-par, 70, on Friday in the opening round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational and is tied second overall in the individual action at the 6,285-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Beck, who is from Caesarea, Israel, registered five birdies over her final 11 holes on her way to finishing with a 70. She enters the second round only three shots off the leader, Hayles Davis of Baylor, who fired a five-under-par, 67. Beck's under par score was the first of the 2012-13 campaign and her 19th career round of even or under par for her career.
As a team, Duke turned in a 296 on Friday and is 10 shots behind first round leader Virginia (286). North Carolina (288), Baylor (288), LSU (294), Duke (296), South Carolina (298), Mississippi (299), N.C. State (300), Arkansas (301) and Florida (301) round out the top 10.
Blue Devil senior Lindy Duncan had an up-and-down day, which featured four birdies, eight pars and six bogeys as she turned in a two-over-par, 74. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan opened her day with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes but struggled over the next 11 holes with five bogeys. She came back with two birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 but closed with a bogey and par on the final two holes. Duncan is tied for 21st overall with 36 holes remaining, after hitting 12 greens, 10 fairways and totaling 31 putts.
The trio of Yi Xiao, Stacey Kim and Celine Boutier each carded a four-over-par, 76, and are tied for 41st. The Blue Devils combined for five birdies on the day. Kim, who is out of Columbus, Ga., hit 10 fairways, 10 greens and had 32 putts, while the China product Xiao had nine fairways, nine greens and 32 putts.
Duke will tee off on Saturday beginning at 9:45 a.m., off hole No. 1 along with LSU and South Carolina. Live scoring will be available via www.Golfstat.com.
