TULSA, Okla. – Freshmen Josh Levine advanced to the third round of the pre-qualifying stage at the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday as two representatives of the Duke men’s tennis team opened play at the event hosted by the University of Tulsa.

During the morning’s first round of action, Levine defeated Joakim Norstrom of Saint Mary’s College of California, 7-6 (2), 6-1. Despite being forced to wait out a long rain delay of nearly four hours and move indoors, the rookie defeated Loyola Marymount’s Nicholas Bjerke in the second round, 6-3, 6-0. Levine will now play the 17th-seeded Joe Salisbury of Memphis in the third round of the pre-qualifying stage on Sunday.

After earning a bye in the first round, fellow freshman Daniel McCall was defeated by the fifth seed of the pre-qualifying draw, Facundo Lugones of TCU, 6-1, 7-6 (4).

“I thought both guys rebounded well after slow starts today,” said assistant coach Jonathan Stokke. “Josh (Levine) did a good job coming out ready to go, after sitting around waiting out the rain delay. He will face a difficult opponent tomorrow from Memphis, but I like his chances against anyone right now.”

The third and fourth rounds of the pre-qualifying draw will be played on Sunday, with Levine’s third round match set to begin at 1 p.m. ET. The 16 winners of the fourth round will advance to the qualifying stage, which will be played Oct. 1-3, to compete for a trip to the main draw.
