COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In a defensive battle between top-25 teams, No. 24 Duke (5-8, 0-4)came up just short, falling 2-0 at No. 5 Maryland (9-3, 3-1) Saturday afternoon in College Park, Md. The Blue Devils held the reigning national champions to seven shots, but were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities in the loss.

"We played very well and had some tough luck," head coach Pam Bustin commented.  "We need to generate some better attacking runs."

The first 20 minutes of the game found both teams scoreless with rare opportunities to score.  At the 22:28 mark, the Terps broke the scoring drought as Jill Witmer fired a shot from the left corner of the circle to put Maryland up 1-0.  Goalkeeper Lauren Blazing got her glove on the ball but unfortunately was unable to stop it from going into the net.

A few minutes later, Duke nearly tied it up with a shot from Brenna Rescigno off a corner that looked like a goal but was called back giving Maryland the 1-0 lead at halftime.

The defensive struggle continued in the second half where Duke had two opportunities to score off of penalty corners, including a shot by junior Grace Christus that soared just high over the goal.  Maryland picked up its second and final goal off a penalty corner with a little over five minutes left in regulation.

Both teams picked up four penalty corners with Maryland edging the shots column 7-5.  Blazing picked up three saves in the defeat.

"We had some stellar individual performances but I am prouder of our team energy and our team play.  We have been building toward a total team performance which must be practiced and strengthened on a daily basis.  We are continuing to grow and improve."

Duke will return to action next Friday against James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.  A full recap will be available at www.GoDuke.com.
