ORLANDO, Fla. – Freshman Michael Redlicki advanced to the singles finals and the doubles semifinals Saturday as the Duke men’s tennis team continued play at the United States Tennis Association Clay Court Invitational at Disney, hosted by Florida State at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Redlicki, the top-ranked freshman in the ITA preseason rankings, advanced to the finals of the gold singles draw after defeating 25th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann of Southern California 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. The win gives the rookie his fourth win of the fall against a ranked opponent, and Hanfmann is the highest ranked player Redlicki has defeated. Redlicki will face USC’s Robert Quiroz in Sunday’s final.
A product of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., Redlicki, advanced from the quarterfinals of the gold singles draw after downing 124th-ranked Chris Konigsfeldt of California in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Meanwhile, sophomore Jason Tahir was defeated by 85th-ranked Roberto Quiroz of Southern California, 6-2, 6-4, while junior Fred Saba was defeated 6-3, 6-1 in his match against Hanfmann, the second-seeded player in the draw. Junior Chris Mengel dropped his match against Juan Pablo Murra of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-3.
In the garnet singles draw quarterfinals, freshman Josh Levine was edged by David Orces of The Citadel, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5, while fellow rookie Daniel McCall defeated Georgia Tech’s Anish Sharma 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the spear singles consolation draw. He will face Florida Atlantic’s Sean Bacha in the spear consolation draw finals on Sunday.
In doubles quarterfinal action, Redlicki and Tahir continued their solid play for the fall season by advancing to Sunday’s semifinals in the gold draw by downing Southern California’s Max De Vroome and Michael Grant, 8-5. The team of Redlicki and Tahir now own a 7-2 record in the fall and will play Florida State’s Benjamin Lock and Dominic Cotrone on Sunday. The top-seeded pair of Mengel and Saba dropped a hard fought decision to Kentucky’s duo of Tom Jomby and Kai-Wen Lai, 8-5.
The freshmen team of Levine and McCall were edged in their garnet doubles draw quarterfinal match by João Gauer and Cristian Gonzalez Mendez of Florida State, 8-5.
The finals in singles, as well as the semifinal and final rounds in doubles are scheduled to be played Sunday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
