DURHAM, N.C. – Third baseman Jay Lizanich got a sacrifice bunt down with one out in the sixth to score the eventual game-winning run as Presbyterian defeated Duke 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field.

With one out in the sixth, right fielder Nathan Chong had a single to left before advancing to second on a Duke error. Catcher Robby Swab followed with a single down the left field line, moving Chong to third. The Blue Hose then scored the eventual game-winner as Lizanich’s bunt on the squeeze play allowed Chong to score from third.

Duke took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Designated hitter Jeff Kremer drew a leadoff walk to begin the inning. After Kremer advanced to second on a passed ball, right fielder Grant McCabe moved him over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms then drove Kremer in with an RBI-groundout.

Second baseman Andrew Williams doubled to start the top of the third and later scored on a sacrifice fly from center fielder Gabe Grammer to tie the game at 1-1.

Lizanich drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give the Blue Hose (23-29) a 2-1 lead.

Kremer walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by McCabe to begin the fifth. Two batters later, catcher Mike Rosenfeld dropped an RBI-double down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2.

Buck Mosteller (2-1) earned the win after holding the Blue Devils to two runs – one earned – on six hits in 6.1 innings. Michael Ricchi pitched 2.2 scoreless frames out of the bullpen to pick up his second save of the season.

Rosenfeld led the Blue Devils at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI-double. Second baseman Mark Lumpa went 2-for-4, Piwnica-Worms was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kremer scored both runs. Shortstop Angelo La Bruna and left fielder Anthony D’Alessandro both added hits for Duke (19-33).

Andrew Istler (4-4) took the loss, allowing three runs – two earned – on seven hits over six innings. Istler had four strikeouts against one walk on the day. Senior reliever David Putman pitched well out of the bullpen, limiting the Blue Hose to just two hits in three shutout frames. Putman struck out four batters and issued just one walk in his appearance.

Duke will hit the road to take on Boston College Thursday-Saturday to wrap up the 2012 season.
