Duke Opens Play at ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – Four members of the Duke men’s tennis team played their way into the third round of singles Thursday on the opening day of action at the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Regional. Overall, the Blue Devils compiled an 11-3 ledger for the day at the tournament, held at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Third-seeded and 22nd-ranked Michael Redlicki cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jackson Keith of Wofford in the morning’s first round before topping Clemson’s Luke Johnson, 7-5, 6-2. The sophomore from Hawthorn Woods, Ill., will face Max Kan of Wake Forest in the round of 32 Friday.

Twelfth-seeded and 111th-ranked Jason Tahir and 13th-seeded Bruno Semenzato also moved on to the round of 32 with a a combined four singles victories. Tahir won a first-set tiebreaker on his way to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over UNC Charlotte’s Jordi Massalle Ferrer in the first round and dispatched Zach Hublitz of UNC Wilmington later in the day, 6-4, 6-4. Semenzato posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Wofford’s Haris Poric in the opening round and followed up that performance with a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Ollie Casey of Appalachian State to also earn a spot in Friday’s third round.

Freshman TJ Pura turned in a pair of strong showings Thursday to advance, defeating the College of Charleston’s Rodrigo Encinas, 7-5, 6-2, and registering a 6-3, 7-5 win over Presbyterian’s Grayson Mills. Next up, Pura will take on 14th-seeded Brett Clark of North Carolina in the round of 32.    

Sophomore and 16th-seeded Josh Levine downed UNC Charlotte’s Paul Cisti, 6-3, 6-2, in his first-round match before suffering a tough 6-3, 7-6 (4) setback to Jon Ho of Wake Forest in the second round. Following Thursday’s action, the Syosset, N.Y., native now owns a fall singles ledger of 9-3. Meanwhile redshirt junior Cale Hammond earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory against NC State’s Ryan Newman in the first round and battled fifth-seeded and 34th-ranked Cameron Silverman of Elon to a three-set decision before falling by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

The day of singles action also saw sophomore Daniel McCall bounce back from a first round loss to outlast Wake Forest’s Anthony Delcore in consolation play, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Friday’s slate at the ITA Carolina Regional includes the first and second round of doubles, beginning at 9 a.m. Three Duke tandems will take to the courts in the morning before play continues in the afternoon with the singles round of 32.
