CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –Duke University sophomore Beatrice Capra collected a three-set victory , 3-6, 6-4, 6-4,  over second-seeded Hayley Carter of North Carolina on Monday to win the 2013 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championship at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

“It feels amazing,” said Capra.  “Our whole team has worked real hard for this tournament and I am real happy with the way the team competed throughout the tournament.  Each match I was getting a little bit better and I really wanted to do well here.  I am very happy with the way I competed and the way I played.  It is a big credit to the hard work we have done.”

After dropping the first set 6-3 and trailing 3-1 in the second, Capra took control of the match, after breaking Carter’s service to cut the deficit to 3-2.  Capra, who is out of Ellicott City, Md., won four out of the next five games to claim the second set, 6-4.

“I thought we competed well,” commented Ashworth about the overall team’s performance at the Carolinas Regional.  “We ended up with two singles and doubles in the quarterfinals.  We would have liked to play a little better doubles all the way through, but we had some good singles wins along the way.  I thought we played better than we did a couple of weeks ago, which is good.  Obviously, with Trice [Beatrice Capra] winning it also was a great thing not only for her but for our entire program.  She did a good job representing herself and Duke as a whole.”

In the deciding third set, Capra fell in the first game and ended up trailing 2-1, before winning four straight games to take a 5-2 advantage.  Carter battled back to break Capra and win the next two games to cut the lead to 5-4.  For the second time in the set, Capra served for the match and ended up claiming a 6-4 third set to claim the singles title.  The match was very even all afternoon and finished with both players notching an amazing 98 points each.

“There was really no momentum for me in the first and second sets,” commented Capra.  “I just kept telling myself to keep fighting, make her play every ball and to work hard.  Eventually in the third set I broke her and I got my opportunities to close out that set.  We were having really long points and it was a three and a half hour match today.  Eventually I came out with a win so it was good.”

In two years with the Blue Devils, Capra has totaled a 37-6 singles mark, including an 11-1 mark this year.

Capra becomes the second straight Duke standout to win the Carolina Regional Championship as Hanna Mar won the singles title a year ago.
