Blue Devils Cruise on Day One of the ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis team opened the 2013 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championship on Friday with a perfect 9-0 record at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Blue Devils started the doubles action in the morning with three wins.  The tandem of top-seeded Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar posted an 8-2 win over Karlee Brvde and Ansley Speaks of Furman.  Duke’s duo of Annie Mulholland and Chalena Scholl were up 4-0 when the Wake Forest team of Brigita Berevte and Kristina Centenari were forced to retire due to an injury.  The Blue Devil tandem of Marianne Jodoin and Alyssa Smith closed doubles with an 8-1 win over Mackenzie LaSure and Gabby Wreder of Appalachian State.  

In Friday’s round of 16, Jodoin and Smith will face Wake Forest’s Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang.  Capra and Mar will go up against North Carolina’s Kate Vialle and Laura Slater, while Mulholland and Scholl will take on Furman’s Margaret Bovette and Alex Moreno.  All doubles matches will start at 8:30 a.m., on Saturday.

Scholl, who is out of Pompano Beach, Fla., made her debut for the Blue Devils on Friday and was very impressive along with Mulholland in doubles.  

Capra, who is a native of Ellicott City, Md., opened singles action versus Jamie Grinberg of UNC Greensboro and didn’t lose a game winning, 6-0, 6-0.  The top-seeded and 27th-ranked Capra will next face Kimmy Guerin on Saturday at 9:45 a.m.

A 78th-ranked senior from Varennes, Quebec, Jodoin collected a 6-1, 6-0 win against Olga Blank of UNC Wilmington and in the round of 32 will face Jessy Rompies at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday.  Mulholland, out of Portland, Ore., improved to 4-0 in singles action on the season with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Isabel Von Stryk of USC Upstate.  She will go up against South Carolina’s Elixane Lechemia at 10:45 a.m., on Saturday.  

The 24th-ranked Mar closed out a 6-2, 6-0 win over Furman’s Speaks and the Burr Ridge, Ill., product will face Tristen Dewar from Clemson at 11:15 a.m., on Saturday in the round of 32.  

Ester Goldfeld, who is ranked 42nd nationally, took down Campbell’s Tamara Stanic by a 6-1, 6-2 ledger on Friday.  A standout from Brooklyn, N.Y., Goldfeld has Alice Garcia from Winthrop as an opponent on Saturday at 12 p.m.  Smith, a rookie from Laguna Niguel, Calif., registered a 7-5, 6-0 win over Luisa Fernandez of Wake Forest in the round of 64.  Her next foe will be 109th-ranked Meghan Blevins of South Carolina at 12 p.m., on Saturday.

Saturday will feature the doubles round of 16, followed by singles rounds of 32 and 16 on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
