DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University men’s soccer team opened its 2013 spring schedule with a convincing 3-0 win over Cincinnati on Sunday morning. The Blue Devils scored twice in the opening half and added a third score early in the second period to come away with the victory.
The Blue Devils dominated the majority of play throughout the 90 minutes. After some back and forth play early on, Duke got on the board when Luis Rendon finished a shot from 12 yards out to put the Blue Devils up 1-0.
Picking up momentum and continuing to maintain possession, it was sophomore Sean Davis striking next with a shot from 15 yards to past the Bearcat goalie and a 2-0 lead with just over 15 minutes to play in the opening 45 minutes.
Cincinnati, facing a two-goal deficit, started to push forward in the closing minutes of the first half, but could not capitalize on their chances. Freshman goaltender Chad Bush came off his line once to stymie a breakaway opportunity, while Sebastien Ibeagha and Nat Eggleston anchored the Blue Devils at center back.
Looking to put the game away for good in the second half, sophomore Nick Palodichuk had a fantastic finish after a stellar ball from Rob Dolot in the midfield. Palodichuk, who missed much of the 2012 campaign to injury, got loose on the left side of the penalty area and rifled a shot past the Cincinnati goalie.
Duke continued to control the run of play over the final 30 minutes. Cincinnati struggled to get into a rhythm in the second half, managing just a few shots overall.
The Blue Devils return to action Wednesday, April 10 against the Carolina Railhawks. Stay tuned to GoDuke.com for complete details this week.
