PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The Duke women’s golf team opened the spring season in Palos Verdes, Calif., this week and the third-ranked Blue Devils placed third overall with a 54-hole total of 881 at the 6,107-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Carding a final round of 291 on Wednesday, UCLA claimed the team title with a three-day total of 870, while Southern California (879), Duke (881), Texas (890), Florida (892), Baylor (898), Arizona (911), Oklahoma State (916), Washington (918) and Oregon (918) rounded out the top 10. The Blue Devils carded rounds of 290, 295 and 296 over the three days of play.
After holding the individual lead heading into the final round, junior Alejandra Cangrejo struggled on the final day as she finished with an 82. A native of Bogota, Colombia, Cangrejo concluded the tournament in a tie for 15th with a three-day total of 222.
Taking the individual title was UCLA’s Erynne Lee with an even-par ledger of 213 over the 54 holes.
Both Lindy Duncan and Laetitia Beck each finished tied for 18th overall with a 54-hole total of 223. Beck closed the day with a 73 to go along with rounds of 73 and 77 over the first two days. A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck notched three birdies and four bogies to go along with 11 pars in the final round.
The reigning National Player of the Year, Duncan turned in a 75 on Wednesday, after opening the day with five consecutive pars on holes No. 4-8. Duncan, who is from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., closed the round with a one-under-par score through the final 11 holes as she notched birdies on No. 11 and No. 15.
Freshman Celine Boutier posted rounds of 73, 75 and 76 to finish tied for 22nd overall with a 224. Boutier, who is a native of Montrouge, France, registered two birdies on the day on holes No. 6 and No. 12.
Turning in Duke’s best round of the day was freshman Yi Xiao as the product of China carded a one-over-par, 72. She opened her round on hole number five and totaled 14 pars and two bogies on the eighth and 13th holes before collecting her lone birdie of the day on the 200-yard, par three second hole. Xiao posted a three-day total of 226 to finish tied for 32nd.
Playing as an individual this week, Irene Jung carded rounds of 72, 77 and 80 to finish tied for 39th overall with a 229. Jung registered three bogeys on the day, but had three double-bogeys as well.
Duke will next play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, La., from Feb. 24-26.
