MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – West Virginia left-hander Harrison Musgrave struck out a season-high 12 batters as the Mountaineers edged the Duke baseball team 3-1 Friday afternoon at Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Musgrave, the 2013 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, limited Duke to two hits over eight innings without issuing a walk to earn the win.

Blue Devil left-hander Trent Swart (2-1) came up just short in the closely-contested pitchers’ duel. The Carlsbad, Calif., native threw 7.0 complete, allowing just a lone run while striking out four and walking one. Swart retired the final eight hitters he faced before giving way to the Blue Devil bullpen.

West Virginia (3-4) struck first with a lone run in the top of the third. Shortstop Taylor Munden and center fielder Bobby Boyd began the frame with back-to-back base hits before a fielder’s choice set up runners at the corners with one out. Duke was unable to turn the double play on a Ryan McBroom grounder to short, allowing Munden to score from third. Swart kept the damage to a minimum, getting Jacob Rice to file out to center for the final out.

The 1-0 West Virginia advantage stood until the top of the eighth when McBroom belted a two-run homer to left field. The WVU first baseman’s third home run of the year put the Mountaineers on top 3-0.

Duke (5-4) rallied in the ninth with Musgrave out of the game. A Mark Lumpa single and Andy Perez walk started things off before Chris Marconcini roped a base knock to left to load the bases. With two away, Ryan Deitrich legged out an infield hit to score Lumpa. Senior Jordan Betts stepped to the plate and laced a ball to the left side which WVU third baseman Cody Semler backhanded to end the game.

Catcher Mike Rosenfeld beat out a bunt single in the seventh to extend his hit streak to seven games, while Marconcini’s single in the ninth stretched his hit streak to eight contests.

The Blue Devils have an early start in Saturday’s contest as Duke faces Marshall at 10 a.m. to begin day two at the Caravelle Resort Tournament.
