TULSA, Okla. – The preseason fourth-ranked Duke women’s golf team closed the Dale McNamara Fall Preview on Wednesday by carding a seven-over-par, 287, on its way to finishing tied for fourth overall at the 6,168, Par 70 Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Duke battled hot and windy conditions on its way to carding a 54-hole total of 856, which was eight shots off Southern California, which shot a team-best four-under-par, 276, in the final round to claim the team lead at 848.  Rounding out the top 10 was Oklahoma (852), Oklahoma State (855), Alabama (856), Duke (856), Arkansas (857), Arizona State (859), Arizona (861), Stanford (867) and Tulane.

“We have a lot to be proud of,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  “We were tied for third after the first day and then led after the second round.  I think we fought hard the whole time.  It was windy and hot so conditions were challenging.  They seemed to keep their chins up the whole time.  I am proud of them and they have a lot to be proud of.”

After being tied for the individual lead after 36 holes, senior Laetitia Beck closed the tournament with a two-over-par, 72, on her way to finishing tied for eighth with a three-day total of 210.  A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck notched 12 pars and two bogeys over the first 14 holes before notching her lone birdie of the day on the 400-yard, par four 15th.  She closed with two pars and a bogey on No. 17 to finish with a 72.  On the day, Beck hit 13 greens, three fairways and had 33 putts.

“She finished in the top 10.  Today she had some putts that didn’t fall,” said Brooks.  “I think she could have gone a little bit lower.  She seemed a little frustrated with her swing, but overall I think she had a pretty good tournament.”

Southern California’s Kyung Kim claimed the individual title with three straight days shooting in the 60s as she totaled a 54-hole total of six-under-par 204.

Sophomore Celine Boutier also posted a two-over-par, 72, on the final day to finish tied for 17th with a 215.  Boutier, who is out of Montrouge, France, opened the day with a three-over-par, 38, on the front nine.  She turned it around on holes 12 and 13 with back-to-back birdies to get to one-over-par for the day.  Boutier closed with four straight pars before suffering a bogey on No. 18.  She hit nine greens, seven fairways and had 30 putts in her round.

Closing out her first collegiate tournament, freshman Sandy Choi turned in the first even-par round of her career as she registered two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars.  Choi, a native of San Diego, Calif., collected her two birdies on par fives – No. 3 and No. 16.  She finished the tournament with a total of 217, which was tied for 24th.

“I am always proud of a freshman that comes in and closes out the tournament with an even par round in pretty tough conditions,” commented Brooks.  “That was fantastic.”

Senior Alejandra Cangrejo turned a 73 on Wednesday on her way to finishing tied for 28th with a 218.  A product of Bogota, Colombia, Cangrejo opened her day with a par on the first hole, bogey on the second and then notched eight straight pars.  She suffered two bogeys and seven pars to finish the day at three-over-par.

After opening the tournament with an even-par, 70, sophomore Yi Xiao struggled to close the week as she totaled a 79 on the final day to finish tied for 67th with a 231.

Duke will next compete in the Mason Rudolph Championship Sept. 20-22 in Nashville, Tenn.
