JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Day two of the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet in Jacksonville, Fla., concluded with junior Elizabeth Kerpon advancing in the women’s open 200.

Kerpon, a native of Coppell, Texas, automatically qualified for Saturday’s 200m semifinal with a third-place finish in the sixth and final heat of the competition. Kerpon, Duke’s school record holder at the distance, clocked a time of 23.77.

By advancing, Kerpon has an opportunity to qualify for the national championship in Eugene, Ore. The top three finishers in each heat, as well as the next three fastest times, advance to the NCAA Championship. Kerpon is slated to compete in the second of three heats at 7:50 p.m.

Earlier in the day, sophomore Megan Clark nearly qualified for her first NCAA Outdoor Championship meet, placing 14th with a clearance of 13-7.25 (4.15). Clark faced her share of adversity during the competition. After clearances at 12-9.50 (3.90), 13-3.50 (4.05) and 13-7.25 (4.15), inclement weather postponed the competition.

While warming up for the restart of the event, Clark’s pole snapped. After collecting herself, Clark made three attempts at 13-9.25 (4.20), but was unable to clear the height. The Fort Benning, Ga., native concludes the season with both the outdoor and indoor school records in the pole vault.

In the 800, sophomore Anima Banks placed sixth in her heat and 14th overall, falling two positions shy of the NCAA qualifying standard. Banks, who clocked a time of 2:06.00, advanced to the semifinal of competition with a time of 2:06.81 in the preliminary round Thursday.

The Blue Devils return to competition at noon with the men’s pole vault.
