PALOS VERDES, Calif. – In the first round of the 2014 spring campaign, the third-ranked Duke women’s golf team carded a six-over-par, 290, and sits tied third overall and only four shots off the lead at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Feb. 9-11 at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Baylor opened action with a two-over-par, 286, with Southern California (288), UCLA (290), Duke (290), Washington (292), Arizona (292), Oklahoma (292), Wake Forest (295), Florida (298), Arizona State (300), Pepperdine (301), North Carolina (302), Ohio State (303), Michigan State (304), Texas (307) and Oklahoma State (308) rounding out the field.
Continuing where she left off from the fall, freshman Yu Liu posted a three-under-par, 68, and is tied second overall and one stroke behind leader Annie Park of Southern California (67). Liu, who is out of Beijing, China, is tied with Louise Gateau-Chovelon of Baylor with a 68.
Liu kicked off her round with a birdie on No. 1, but had one of only two bogeys on the day, on the third hole to get back to even par. She rolled in a 20-foot birdie on the 475-yard, par five fifth before reeling off six straight pars. Liu carded back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th to move to three-under-par. She played her final five holes at even par, which included a bogey on No. 14 and a birdie on No. 16. Overall, she hit nine fairways, 15 greens and had 30 putts.
Sophomore Celine Boutier notched a one-over-par, 72, and is tied 16th, after day one of action. Boutier, who is out of Montrouge, France, carded a tied for team best five birdies on the afternoon. She had three birdies, three bogeys and three pars on the front nine and on the back turned in two birdies, three bogeys and four pars.
With a three-over-par, 74, Esther Lee is tied 28th, after playing her final 11 holes at even par. Lee, a native of Los Alamitos, Calif., collected three bogeys and six pars on the front nine. She notched her lone birdie of the day on the 263-yard, par four 12th, before closing with six straight pars. Lee hit 10 fairways, 12 greens and had 33 putts on the day.
Senior Alejandra Cangrejo notched a 76 and senior Laetitia Beck added a 77 in round one and are tied 41st and tied 54th, respectively. The duo both turned in 38 putts and hit 15 greens on the day.
Duke will tee off on Monday in the second of three rounds on Monday beginning at 12:15 p.m. (ET).
