CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Duke women’s soccer team closed the UNC Nike Classic Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to sixth-ranked Stanford at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Blue Devils dropped to 0-2 on the season, marking the first 0-2 start since the 1996 campaign, while the Cardinal closed its East Coast trip with a 2-0 record.

The first 45 minutes of action were all Stanford as the Cardinal held a 7-2 shot advantage with some very good opportunities to take the lead.  The Blue Devils featured two shots by freshman defender Morgan Reid and freshman Casey Martinez came off the bench to notch a header off a free kick.  Neither shot were very dangerous.

Duke had its best offensive opportunity of the match at the 55:46 mark as junior Kara Wilson sent a great feed down to a streaking Kelly Cobb on the right side.  Cobb, who is out of Chugiak, Alaska, made an excellent cutback and fired a left-footed shot that went wide.

Less than a minute later though, Stanford countered with the first goal of the match as Andi Sullivan and Hannah Farr connected with Lo’eau LaBonta for a header goal over the outstretched hands of Duke goalkeeper Ali Kershner.

Duke came back with another great opportunity as freshman Imani Dorsey made a great cross to a leaping senior Gilda Doria, but Doria’s header attempt went just high over the crossbar.

After the Blue Devils made substitutions to try to get the tying goal, Duke went with only two defenders in the back along with rookie goalkeeper EJ Proctor.  Stanford was able to take advantage with some nice passing and was able to take a 2-0 lead.  Haley Rosen found herself with an open net and finished at the 5:50 mark.

For the match, Stanford outshot Duke, 11-7, as the Blue Devils were led by Martinez with two.  Other Blue Devils attempting shots were Cobb, Toni Payne, Schuyler DeBree, Reid and Doria.

Kershner, a redshirt junior from Palo Alto, Calif., finished the day with one save in 76:40 minutes, while Proctor played the final 13:20 in the net.

Duke will next travel to West Virginia Friday, Aug. 29 for a 7:30 p.m., opening kick.

Notes:
•    The Blue Devils started four freshmen on the afternoon – Ashton Miller, Imani Dorsey, Schuyler DeBree and Morgan Reid.
•    Both Christina Gibbons and Rebecca Quinn made their first starts of the season, after recently returning from the U-20 World Cup in Canada.
